Dan Pickett Honored – by Sandy McBride

   Us old-time Red Raider basketball fans still remember going to games five and a half decades ago when a sharp-shooting guard named Dan Pickett was racking up the points on driving layups, quick jump shots and long-range bombs.  In his three year varsity career from 1958 through 1961, he was always one of the top scorers on his team.

Erin Mastropietro Meeting Challenges – by Sandy McBride

   When Erin Mastropietro’s first ball of the tenth frame rocketed into the pins, a three pin split remained standing at the end of the alley.  A wave of groans followed by enthusiastic applause sounded from the crowd gathered at Hometown Lanes to watch the bowling match between Mechanicville High School and Cohoes High School on Thursday afternoon.

Baroness von Reidesel: Woman of Courage – by Sandy McBride

   While the debate goes on here in America on the roles of women in combat, it’s interesting to note that throughout history, women have often performed courageously in many roles in times of war.  One such fascinating woman became a hero of sorts right here in our area as Americans fought for their independence from Great Britain back in 1777.
