World Day of Prayer – by Sandy McBride

In a gathering and tradition that is nearly 100 years old, our local churches will once again link hands around the world to celebrate World Day of Prayer on March 4 at 1 p.m. at the Stillwater United Church on North Hudson Avenue in the village.   The first World Day of Prayer service was held on January 9, 1920 in Canada, followed five weeks later by services held in the United States.  There are now 170 nations around the world that join in this moving ceremony that not only empowers women, but calls attention to the challenges, the problems and the trials they face every day.

July 4, 1976 was a milestone in American history as the United States of America celebrated its 200th birthday.  Here in Mechanicville, as in communities all across the country, the festivities were well-planned long in advance of the day, and designed by the city’s Bicentennial Committee to be celebratory, reverent, respectful, loud and joyous.  The committee and the Mechanicville City Council honored a proposal by the Mechanicville Council of Churches to begin the day’s events with an ecumenical service of Thanksgiving in Tallmadge Park.

MACSC Honors Hearts of the Community – by Sandy McBride

The Mechanicville Area Community Services Center celebrated their annual “Hearts of the Community” at Fairways of Halfmoon last Friday evening, honoring the local Outstanding Service Organization, Company, Volunteer, and Community Partner. And this year, the center also presented the Founders’ Award.

Mechanicville Student Athletes Honored – by Sandy McBride

It was a three-step celebration in the Mechanicville High School gym last Tuesday morning. The formal presentation of the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll Gold Football given by the National Football League in Joe Cocozzo’s honor took place, along with the presentation to the Red Raider football team of the plaque won for being the Section 2 Central Division Champions in Class C, and the recognition of the school’s 87 scholar/athletes in fall sports.

Ryan McBride,  Mechanicville High School graduate, dean's list SUNY Cortland.  Ryan, the son of Steve and Vicki McBride, is spending his final undergraduate semester in Dublin, Ireland on an internship with the Nutrition and Health Foundation.
Erika Kemble,  Winfield High School, Winfield Alabama graduate, dean's list University of Alabama.  Erika is the daughter of Scott and Bonnie Kemble formerly of Mechanicville.
Martin McBride, Morgan High School graduate, Clinton CT., dean's list Siena College. Martin is the son of Marty and Ella McBride, formerly of Mechanicville.
