Mechanicville Library Celebrates 50 Years – by Sandy McBride

The Mechanicville District Public Library celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday with a gathering in the Angelo and Jake De Crescente Reading Room at the library.  Trustee Tom Golden introduced Congressman Paul Tonko of the 20th Congressional District who presented a Proclamation from the House of Representatives congratulating the library on reaching this milestone.

Mechanicville Valedictorian and Salutatorian Honored – by Sandy McBride

A reception was held in the Mechanicville High School library on Wednesday afternoon to honor Megan Billert, valedictorian, and David Coreno, salutatorian, of the class of 2016.  Called “. . . two of the finest young people I’ve had the good fortune to teach . . .” by English teacher Michael Daley, Megan and David were presented with plaques commemorating their achievement.

Mechanicville Scholar Athletes Recognized – by Sandy McBride

Mechanicville Junior/Senior High School Vice Principal Craig Forth welcomed a throng of student/athletes to the gym on Thursday morning to what he termed “an awesome event”.  It was the presentation of New York State Public High School Athletic Association pins and certificates to the members of the nine Red Raider winter and spring sports teams which have achieved Team Scholar Athlete status according to the standards required by the state organization.

Where Are Our Flags ? – by Sandy McBride

We have just celebrated Memorial Day.  Next week we will celebrate Flag Day. Less than three weeks after that, we will celebrate Independence Day. Mechanicville will soon rededicate its Veterans Monument, newly relocated to Tallmadge Park. The stars and stripes, the aura of patriotism, are very much front and center these days.

On Memorial Day in 2016, it was heartwarming to see so many people posting on Facebook their messages of respect and gratitude for our veterans who gave their lives for this nation in so many wars over so many years.  It was inspiring to see so many messages of honor to our veterans on TV, at sporting events, parades and other gatherings.

School Bullying “Be a Hero” – by Sandy McBride

 

 

DSC_4428_40373_16-0602Bully copyTom Murphy of Sweethearts and Heroes appeared at Mechanicville Elementary and Middle Schools last week and presented his anti-bullying message on various levels, beginning with students in K-2, then 3-5 and finally with middle school students in 6-8.  He also spoke with teachers and bus drivers, giving them insight into their potential roles in alleviating bullying.
