New supervisor in Pittstown – by Christine Barton

Town of Pittstown-Newly elected Town of Pittstown Supervisor Verna Hansen was sworn in on January 3rd at 1pm along with several other newly elected town government officials that will begin their terms on January 1st 2016. Ed King held the position of town supervisor for the last four years.  King was 75th supervisor of the Town of Pittstown, and according to Hansen, “he put his heart and soul into this town.”

NYS Common Core Gets an Overhaul – by Christine Barton

The Common Core State Standards that have been the subject of many debates since implementation will soon be getting an overhaul.  A task force set up to review the standards was formed after New York students in schools across the state were boycotting academic tests associated with the new standards.

Pipeline Controversy in Rensselaer County – by C. Barton

Rensselaer County- Rensselaer County is currently faced with the potential for a natural gas pipeline proposal that will run through several towns in the county.  In late 2014, fracking, a widely used gas extracting technique, became illegal in New York State after legislation was put in place to prohibit this practice, however this law does not address the transporting of natural gas

Hoosic Valley Students Perform – by C. Barton

Hoosic Valley high school students, Kayla Carknard, senior, Kyle Norton, junior and Gregory Wolosen, junior, were selected to join the stage for this years Capital Region Holiday favorite, the Melodies of Christmas. The holiday extravaganza is sponsored each year by CBS 6. The performances were held at Proctors Theatre on December 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th.
