MECHANICVILLE SEPTEMBER 17- At the City Council Meeting City Clerk Mark Seber announced that 5 properties in the City still have unpaid taxes. On October 9th at the Senior Citizens Center an auction will commence to dispose of any or all of those properties whose taxes are still unpaid.

Village and Town Settle GE $ – by H. Wessell

Stillwaters, June 18
After several months of negotiation, the Town and Village of Stillwater have arrived at an acceptable proposal for the division and distribution of the net proceeds of the GE litigation settlement which the Village won earlier this year.
The Village and Town Boards, in identical resolutions at their monthly meetings of June 16 and 18 respectively, have agreed $86,000 is to be paid to the Town; and the balance of $4,368,469, to the Village.

Why Did We Do The Ice Bucket Challenge? – by S. McBride

The Ice Bucket Challenge.  Who in this country hasn’t heard of it, participated in it, rejoiced in it, derided it or declined it?  This craze that dominated electronic media and spiraled all over the country in the past several months is a good thing.   I know that after a while, people began to get weary of seeing everybody and his brother, mother, father, sister, kids and grandkids, celebrities and sports stars pouring buckets of ice water over their heads, all in the name of raising money for research to find a cure for ALS, but don’t knock it until you fully understand what it’s all about.

Flax Mills in Schaghticoke – by C. Kelly

Last week, in this long series about the early textile mills using the water power of the Hoosic River in Schaghticoke, I spoke about the Joy Mill, which used flax as its raw material. It was owned by Bostonian Benjamin Joy. That information and what follows comes from a census of local mills done by Richard Hart of Troy in 1831, now located in the Hart Papers at the Rensselaer County Historical Society.

Foster Parents Needed in the Area – by C. Barton

Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties- The signs “Become a Foster Parent” have been hanging in communities around the area. These signs have been seen at recent county fairs in Saratoga, Washington and Rensselaer County and are visible throughout communities in the area. We are lacking in families in Southern Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties at this time, says Kelli Reilly, Homefinder for the Foster Care Program at Berkshire Farm. Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth is a statewide agency that offers an array of services for children and families including foster care. The organization has been, “changing lives, changing futures, since 1886.”
