Mechanicville, NY September 26, 2014…National news stories appear about the explosion of domestic violence. From professional athletes, to local offenders, domestic violence affects men, women, and children on a daily basis. Whether or not it’s referred to as battering, family abuse, or intimate partner violence, domestic violence is a physical, emotional and/or psychological behavior that one person uses to gain power and control over another in a relationship. In Mechanicville alone, a small city of one square mile, there was a 32% increase in domestic incident reports filed by police officers in 2012. Throughout the country, there are millions of stories about the abuse of real people. According to the Allstate Foundation Poll on Domestic Violence, 74 percent of Americans know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence.

All of us who grew up in this area a few years back know that song which was written by Thomas Allen back in 1905. We sang it in school. It was Americana. For us in the Mechanicville-Stillwater-Waterford-Halfmoon area, it was our own history. We live in an area where a century and a half ago the Erie Canal and the Champlain Canal were both life-giving arteries that made transportation, settlement and commerce possible throughout northern and central New York in the days before there were planes, trains and automobiles, big trucks and superhighways. The barges and passenger boats that plied the waters of these amazing canals in the 19th and early 20th centuries were for the most part powered by mules walking the towpaths.

HALFMOON- Sunday October 5th The Halfmoon-Waterford Fire District No.1 held their annual fire prevention open house. October is fire prevention month so this was a great event to show families and kids what their volunteer fire department does on a daily basis to protect them and our community. This year’s theme is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Every Month”.

Capital District-On Saturday October 4th following a celebratory ceremony to kick off the day, the Leatherstocking Honor Flight set off for a trip to Washington D.C. The Honor Flight allowed many Capital Region Veterans to “experience and reflect together at their memorials.” The Leatherstocking Honor Flight was established in 2008. Leatherstocking is hub of the National Honor Flight Network, which serves the Greater Capital District of York, Western Massachusetts and Vermont. To date over 1,000 Veterans have been escorted to Washington D.C by way of the Leatherstocking Honor Flight. Currently there are hubs in almost all of the 50 states, each supporting the mission, “to recognize American Veterans for their sacrifices and achievements by flying them to Washington D.C to see their memorials, at no cost to them.”

MECHANICVILLE – Garrett J. Geurtze, III, 82 of Saratoga Ave., died Tuesday, Sept. 30th at Saratoga Hospital, following an extended illness.
A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5th at 5 PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville. Calling hours at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 3-5 PM.

MECHANICVILLE – Jacqueline M. Ronda, 56, of No Main St., died suddenly Monday, Sept 29th, at home, as a result of a fall in her residence.
