Epiphany: The Rest of the Story – by H. Wessell

In the Irish half of this writer’s lineage, it’s often called “Little Christmas;” but it is much more than that. (Nor is it little.)
The feast of the Epiphany, or "appearance" of the Christ, traditionally on January 6, in Western Christendom not only predates Christmas Day as a celebration of the coming of a Savior into history, by at least a hundred years. What is more, that “Little” is a bit ironic: because in the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar the feast in a way “outranked” December 25 for centuries until our own time, in 1970. The feast is still of about equal dignity.

Mechanicville Basketball

MECHANICVILLE NOVEMBER 29- After a loss to Lansingburgh the previous night the Red Raiders redeemed themselves with a win over Ravena in the Annual Thanksgiving Invitational. This game was won on the foul line. Mechanicville took 43 foul shots, and made 35 while Ravena made 9 of 13. Evan Dunn led the way with 36 points for the Raiders followed by: D'Ambro 22, Nick Vermilyea 16, Pickett 5, Tironi 3, and Henes 2 points each.

Arthur B. “Pete” Canavan – 76

MECHANICVILLE – Arthur B. “Pete” Canavan, 76, longtime resident of Mechanicville, died Wednesday, Dec. 10th at home, after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Private services are being held at the convenience of the family. Remembrances may be made to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County. Arrangements by DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, Mechanicville.

Santa Joins the 3rd Annual Halfmoon Celebration – by M. LeMay

HALFMOON DECEMBER 6 -On a rainy evening the Halfmoon Celebrations Committee held its 3rd Annual Holiday Celebration event at the Halfmoon Town Hall. This was a free event open to the public and put on by the volunteers of the Halfmoon Celebrations Association and their supportive sponsors. Hundreds of people filled the town hall to capacity over a couple of hours.

Val’s Sporting Goods Relocates – by Sandy McBride

In spite of a cold December drizzle, Val’s Sporting Goods enjoyed a well-attended Grand Opening on Saturday in its new location at 42 Hudson Avenue in the former DeCrescente Distributors Fitness Center, an expansive building overlooking the Hudson River.  Owned and operated by Val Serbalik’s grandson Josh Phelps for the past seven years, Val’s will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2015.

Pearl Harbor Remembered at Local Legion Halls

MECHANICVILLE DECEMBER 7- Post Chaplain Bill Wicks read the name of the 53 Mechanicville servicemen who lost their lives in WWII at the Pearl Harbor Remembrance at Lt. Fred Clark American Legion Post #91.Robin Ringlet=r read the poem , "Do you remember me?" written from the perspective of one of the 2,335 who died on December 7th at Pearl Harbor. She led everyone in singing "Remember Pearl Harbor"- written shortly after the event.

Central Ave. to Open “Sometime During the Week of Dec. 15th” – by Gerstenberger, Gowett & Coreno

MECHANICVILLE DECEMBER 3 - Commissioner Higgins stated at the city council meeting that the bridge is about 1 week behind due to the weather. Saratoga County Department of Public Works informed him that because of recent temperatures under 45 degrees the concrete could not cure.

Jobs, Salaries to Change at Maplewood – by H. Wessell

STILLWATER AND BALLSTON SPA -- According to a document provided to Maplewood Manor employees,  presumptive purchaser of the facility Zenith Healthcare proposes to cut 27 full- and part-time nurse and sixty full- and part-time nursing aide positions  — along with about nine food service related workers; and thereby to save more than $1.8 million – this, as well as proposed pay cuts, many reaching well over forty percent for various positions.

Troy Victorian Stroll – by Christine Barton

Troy-On Sunday December 7th, the city of Troy was transformed back into the Victorian era during the 32nd annual Victorian Stroll held in downtown Troy. The Stroll is estimated to draw a crowd of over 20,000 visitors to the city each year. The event is organized by the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce and privately funded through contributions with operational support provided by the City of Troy.
