   Tom and I have celebrated more than fifty Christmases together.  Most were joyous, happy and festive, some were sad and heart-wrenching, some were trying in various ways.  But we love Christmas.  The reason, the traditions, the celebrations are always there, memories lingering in each ornament, each decoration, each saved Christmas message from years past, each photograph of our growing family together at Christmas.

   Here in our small town world in the cold and snowy northeast, Christmas is a season of evergreen trees, decorations, bright lights, frenzied shopping, great food, family love and togetherness . . .  and music.

   Ah, music.  Some of the most beautiful music ever written has been written to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ more than 20 centuries ago.  If you are looking for a way to make this Christmas more special, for a chance to hear beautiful music in live performance close to home so you don’t have to navigate crowded interstates to hear it, you might consider coming to the United Methodist Church here in downtown Mechanicville on Sunday afternoon, December 21.

Sherman’s March to the Sea – By S. McBride

Union forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman had taken Atlanta in the early days of September, 1864, but the defending Confederate Army of Tennessee under General John Bell Hood hadn’t gone far.  They encamped south of the captured city while Hood made plans to lure Sherman away from Atlanta and into battle in the field.  Indeed, President Jefferson Davis had told cheering crowds in Georgia and South Carolina that “I see no chance for Sherman to escape from a defeat or a disgraceful retreat”.

   The United States of America has been blessed these past few centuries to have men and women and, in some cases, children who have stood up for our rights, our independence and our humanity despite the personal sacrifices to be made and dangers to be faced.  On November 11 each year we pause to honor and celebrate these selfless veterans who have served us in many wars, conflicts, natural disasters and periods of peace since our beginning in the 18th century.
