Malta Community Center – by H. Wessell
MALTA, June 18 - The Malta Community Center is not simply a physical facility, but somewhat a tip-of-the-iceberg ñ a pretty expansive iceberg, at that ñ as the nerve center of the Town's Department of Parks, Recreation & Human Services.
The Mission Statement reads: "To enhance the quality of life in our community, the Town of Malta Parks, Recreation & Human Services strives to be a leader by providing exceptional programs, facilities and services." As part of comprehensive planning, the Town has striven to provide recreational diversity and enhanced community services. In 2008 the building, built in 2000, was expanded to 20,000 square feet, so as to become an intergenerational center providing social, health, recreational, cultural and educational opportunities. It is also home to an increasingly busy Town Library.

Heggen Family Tradition – by H. Wessell
MALTA: The woman in the picture "has a history" but in a good sense of the phrase with the government of the Town of Malta, as well of Southern Saratoga County, and countywide.
She may well be making some more of it, next year: as potentially the first woman to hold the position as one of the County's top lawyers: the District Attorney and in something of a family tradition, at that.
Karen A. Heggen is literally a Malta "hometown girl," born and raised and residing in the Town. She graduated from Ballston Spa High School, Middlebury College, and Vermont Law School, where she earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1991.

Ripe Tomato Continues a Long Dining Tradition – by Harold Wessell
The Ripe Tomato Restaurant, subtitled "An American Grill," at U.S. Rte. 9 and East High Street and its founder Joe Gleason both turn eighty years old in 2014. Neither has been in the restaurant all its/his life but a lot of it, in both cases.
In 1934 when the building was erected, Rte. 9 was the major route from Manhattan to the Adirondacks and beyond. Signs on the Northway, let folks know the restaurant is nearby. In 2013's web guide TripAdvisor, it was awarded the Certificate of Excellence: a distinction that places it in the top-performing 10 percent of all businesses appearing worldwide on TripAdvisor .

Malta Passes Right-to-Farm – by H. Wessell
MALTA, June 2 ñ The Malta Town Board on Wednesday adopted the Town's new Agricultural Protection Overlay District Law.
The law was several years in the making, in a collaboration of the Town's Open Space, Agriculture and Trails Committee, chaired by David Haight, and Town Parks and Recreation Director Audrey Ball.
Ball related how in 2009 the Town completed its Agricultural Enhancement Strategy aimed at preserving farmland; and on recommendation of the Open Space Committee, the Town Board adopted the State's new Right to Farm Law locally.
