Area residents received degrees at SUNY Poly Commencement

UTICA, NY (06/11/2015)(readMedia)-- The following students received degrees at SUNY Polytechnic Institute's 41st annual spring commencement May 9 in the Wildcat Field House on the SUNY Poly campus in Marcy, N.Y.

SUNY Potsdam Names Area Students to Dean's List

POTSDAM, NY (06/09/2015)(readMedia)-- The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 367 students who excelled academically in the Spring 2015 semester to the College's Dean's List.

The students included:

Area SUNY Potsdam Students Named to President's List

POTSDAM, NY (06/09/2015)(readMedia)-- The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 907 students to the President's List, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Spring 2015 semester. The SUNY Potsdam students were honored for earning top marks by President Kristin G. Esterberg.

Miss Veronica M. Kushneir – 101

STILLWATER, NY – Miss Veronica M. Kushneir, 101, former longtime resident of Blizzard Road, died Saturday, June 6th at Elderwood at Birchwood, Liverpool, NY, after an extended illness.   A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 12th at 2 PM at All Saints on the Hudson Church (St. Peter’s) No. Hudson Ave., Stillwater. Burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the Church on Friday from Noon till Mass time.

John A. DeMarco – 93

MECHANICVILLE – John A. DeMarco, 93, of Farrell St., died Monday, June 8th at Diamond Hill, Troy after an extended illness.A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at Noon at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 No. Main St., Mechanicville. New York Oncology Opens in Clifton Park – by Sam DeCelle

Deemed the “Center of Hope", by U.S. representative Paul Tonko, the new New York Oncology and Hematology held their open house on Friday June 5th at their new location at 3 Crossing Blvd, Clifton Park, NY.

   On hand at the ribbon cutting were doctors working for NYOH as well as many patients who came to share their stories and experiences about their time with NYOH.

New Waterford Policeman Saves Life – by H. Wessell

TOWN OF WATERFORD, June 2 – About a months ago in the Town of Waterford, two of its police officers, trained last year in use of  the drug Naloxone, an antidote capable of reversing in moments  a potentially fatal heroin overdose, for the first time saved a life –  of a man who was as good as dead.

   This month, another Waterford officer, the newest member of the department, did it again.

Memorial Garden for Malta Presbyterian – by S. McBride

Malta Presbyterian Church sits quietly in the midst of a bustling area.  Cars whiz by on the road in front of it.  The sounds of new construction can be heard not too far away. A modern bank building sits just to the west of it.  A woodlot of tall maple, locust and sumac trees and various bushes shield it on its north and east sides, a quiet reminder of the once-rural landscape the simple but elegant building has graced for 170 years.

Mechanicville Student Athletes Honored – by Sam DeCelle

Student Athlete, not Athlete Student. Something that Mechanicville High School sports has proven as correct over the past year as many of our students were honored by NYS at the conclusion of the spring sports season as scholar athletes.

   To attain this title and be recognized by the state, a team must have a percentage of its athletes with a 90 or above grade average. This past school year, Mechanicville had representatives from eight different sports teams. The percentage of students needed to meet the qualifications depended on the size of the sports team.
