William L. McBride – 65

STILLWATER – William L. McBride, 65, of Hudson Avenue, died early Thursday at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany, after being stricken at home the day before.  Born in Troy, May 7, 1950, he was the son of Mona Ciepiela McBride of Halfmoon and the late William McBride, Jr.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 24th from 3-7PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 South Main Street, Mechanicville, NY 12118.  A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 9:30AM at the funeral home with military honors and burial to follow at the Saratoga National Cemetery.

In keeping with his wishes, Bill’s family requests that in lieu of flowers and in his memory, ALL remembrances be made to VETHELP, 36 Church Avenue, Ballston Spa,NY 12020, an organization formed to help house and provide living essentials to homeless veterans in our area. Spacial Dynamics Softball – by S. McBride

When they were told that the next phase of their annual 10 day summer conference at Spacial Dynamics Institute here in Mechanicville was going to be learning to play softball, fully half of the 100 participants groaned that they either don’t like baseball or can’t even throw a ball.  But, says instructor Heather Lanier of California, within five minutes of being shown the proper dynamics of throwing a ball, the skeptics had improved their abilities by at least 50%.

Catherine A. Whitney McBride – 47

MECHANICVILLE – Catherine A. Whitney McBride, 47, of Round Lake Ave. died peacefully, early Wednesday morning, July 29, at Saratoga Hospital in the company of her loving family. Born in Troy, July 3, 1968, she was the daughter of Mary Scott Whitney of Burnt Hills and the late Charles R. Whitney who died in 1993.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 31 at 7PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 South Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118 with calling hours from 4-7PM prior to the service. Interment at the Saratoga National Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Cathy in a special way are asked to make donations to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204 in loving memory of Catherine A. McBride.

The Battle of Saratoga from September to October of 1777 is recognized as one of the 15 most decisive battles in the history of the world. Indeed, it was a vital victory for Continental troops who stopped the invasion of British General John Burgoyne as he sought to put down the rebellion of those who would create their own nation from a cluster of English colonies. With the success at Saratoga, France recognized American independence and came into the war as an ally.

We’ve been blessed here in our hometown this summer to celebrate the 100th birthdays of two lovely ladies who were born here in Mechanicville in 1915, Mary LaVigna Canonica and Molly DeCrescenzo Bango.  A century in time, an eyeblink in history.  A life span rarely achieved.  Just what was life like a century ago?

World War I began with the assassination of one small nation’s leader in April, 1914 which ignited a glut of regional hostilities, and like a spider snaring victims in a web, drew much of Europe into a war like none the world had ever seen before.

   The United States resisted involvement for several years, not wanting to get sucked into a primarily European war that had little meaning for the western hemisphere.  But on April 6, 1917, the United States declared war on Germany after a number of attacks on civilian ships and an attempt by Germany to draw Mexico into the war on their side.
