Ripe Tomato Continues a Long Dining Tradition – by Harold Wessell

The Ripe Tomato Restaurant, subtitled "An American Grill," at U.S. Rte. 9 and East High Street and its founder  Joe Gleason both turn eighty years old in 2014.  Neither has been in the restaurant all its/his life but a lot of it, in both cases.

In 1934 when the building was erected,  Rte. 9  was  the major route from Manhattan to the Adirondacks and beyond.  Signs on the Northway, let folks know the restaurant is nearby. In 2013's web guide TripAdvisor, it was awarded the  Certificate of Excellence: a distinction that places it in the top-performing 10 percent of all businesses appearing worldwide on TripAdvisor .

HOPE Pets for Adoption

Joanne is a spunky, lively three-year old. She rules the roost, confident and unflappable, she's a true alpha cat. Joanne must know what is going on in her home at all times— you will often find her perched up high checking that everyone, including the humans, are ok. She loves to snuggle and play with her foster family — and a little ear scratching will maker her day. Check out her adorable extra toes and striking golden eyes. Joanne is good with other cats and dogs (4 of them are currently under her supervision). If you need some order in your household Joanne might be just the gal to help out.

Joanne is spayed, up to date on all her vaccinations and has tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.

Harper is a very confident 1 1/2 year-old little lady. She enjoys sleeping in the sun all day and curling up on soft bed covers. She loves playing with anything and everything left to her for toys. She enjoys chasing bugs as her little hunter self. Harper is a little shy and quite independent preferring the other cats to people, although sometimes she will follow you around until she gets what she wants (dinner or toys or a quick pet). She would be perfect for a family that is looking to find a companion for an existing pet or a family that would like to adopt more than one cat. Harper is up to date on her vaccinations, spayed and has tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.

On June 30, Dennis Latham will step down as Chief of Police of the Stillwater Police Department after 30 years in that position.  For Dennis, it will be a bittersweet moment.  It may be time to move on to the next stage of a busy and productive life, but leaving the department which he helped to found 38 years ago, and the fellow officers with whom he shares a mutual respect and sense of camaraderie after so many years of facing so many challenges, is not easy for him.

Mechanicville’s D.A.R.E. Race – by Sandy McBride

122 runners and two dozen walkers gathered last Wednesday to participate in the 25th annual DARE race and fun walk in downtown Mechanicville.  Kevin Connors of the Connors Agency, an original sponsor of the event, was pleased to announce that Joe Kelly had run the race for the 25th time, the only entrant to do all twenty-five.  Mr. Kelly is more than 80 years old, and Kevin says he knocked two full seconds off his 2013 time!  He was beaten in his age division by fellow octogenarian Richard Schumacher by less than a minute.  And trailing by not a lot was the winner of the 90 plus division, Virginia Donahue.

Malta Passes Right-to-Farm – by H. Wessell

MALTA, June 2 ñ The Malta Town Board on Wednesday adopted the Town's new Agricultural Protection Overlay District Law.

The law was several years in the making, in a collaboration of the Town's Open Space, Agriculture and Trails Committee, chaired by David Haight, and Town Parks and Recreation Director Audrey Ball.

Ball related how in 2009 the Town completed its Agricultural Enhancement Strategy aimed at preserving farmland; and on recommendation of the Open Space Committee, the Town Board adopted the State's new Right to Farm Law locally.
