Free Summer Meals at Park Ave. Playground

MECHANICVILLE JULY 7- Thirty children arrived at the Park Avenue Playground for free summer lunch. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through August 15 children 18 and under will receive a free lunch by simply showing up at the playground. This program is administered by the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center through funding by the United Way.

Congressman Paul Tonko was a special guest. He spent time with the MACSC staff and volunteers. Then he spent some time with the children on the swings and the playground merry go round.

This Month in the Civil War: Sherman Moves to Georgia – By S. McBride

 

  “Mine eyes have beheld the Promised Land!”

   So wrote Major James Connolly of the 123rd Illinois Infantry to his wife, describing the arrival of Union forces on a high bluff overlooking the second-most important city in the Confederate States of America – Atlanta, Georgia - in mid-July of 1864.

   The Union soldiers, on seeing the city, gave voice to a cheer that Major Connolly supposed might have been heard all the way to Atlanta.  Within moments, he said, Generals William T. Sherman and George Thomas had joined them on the overlook, gazing southward across the Chattahoochee River at the city in the distance.  Atlanta was a strategic city, a rail hub with foundries, factories, munitions plants and supply depots all very vital to the survival of the Confederacy. Its importance to the rebellious south could not be overstated, and the Confederates had encircled it with elaborate fortifications.

City Approves New Stop Signs, Moratorium on Tag Days – by T. Mahoney

MECHANICVILLE JULY 2- Mechanicville DPW will be paid from NYSEG to do the black topping to cover the holes they have dug for the gas replacement lines.

Chief Waldron recommended that the City increase fines for truck traffic penalties.Many trucks have not been following the posted signs in the City. He suggested that the first offense go from $50 to the $150-$250 range; 2nd offense $250 -$350; and 3rd offense $350. This will require an amendment to the City Code. Waldron believes the current fines are so small that it is easier to pay the fine than to take the 9 mile re routing. The extra truck traffic on Main may be the cause of the water main breaks.

GE Settles: Town & Village Must Reach Agreement – By T. Mahoney

STILLWATER JULY 3- The Albany times Union published that GE will pay $7.95 million to settle a suit filed by the towns and villages of Stillwater, Waterford, and the Water Commissioners of Waterford. The suit was filed in 2009when these municipalities had to move or shut down their water supplies when GE began dredging PCBs from the Hudson River that year.

Toby is a 1-2 year old Silkie Terrier/Jack Russell mix who is housetrained, up to date with all his shots, and microchipped. He weighs 13.6 lbs.
Toby is very sweet and a little shy at first, but it doesn't take long for him to
warm up. He's good with children and cats. Toby hasn't been around a lot

Bentley is a 3-year old neutered male Pomeranian, who is up to date on his shots and micro-chipped. He likes to ride in the car and is good with older children, dogs, and cats. He is house trained and crate trained. Bentley is like a fluffy teddy bear! He loves to be cuddled and he cuddles back quite willingly. He loves to play with balls and toys. When he gets excited he lays down on the floor throwing his head around in the cutest antics. Bentley walks well on a leash and understands the heal command. He also knows the sit and stay commands, and he will also stop barking on command. Due to Bentley's love of running, it would be best if his forever home have a fenced yard and be in a low traffic area.

Harper is a very confident 1 1/2 year-old little lady. She enjoys sleeping in the sun all day and curling up on soft bed covers. She loves playing with anything and everything left to her for toys. She enjoys chasing bugs as her little hunter self. Harper is a little shy and quite independent preferring the other cats to people, although sometimes she will follow you around until she gets what she wants (dinner or toys or a quick pet). She would be perfect for a family that is looking to find a companion for an existing pet or a family that would like to adopt more than one cat. Harper is up to date on her vaccinations, spayed and has tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.

Gabby is an 8-month old, black and white female kitten. She is a sweet, independent, calm little lady. Gabby enjoys hiding in boxes, surprising her friends as they walk by and having you throw a ball that she can chase. At night she insists on snuggling right up next to you and you will wake up having her stare at you until you get up and give her a treat. Gabby gets along with other cats and still plays with her dog friends.. Gabby is spayed and up to date on her shots.

"Let Them Know There Is H.O.P.E."

July 5th and 6th at the Stillwater Blockhouse

STILLWATER - Have you ever wondered what went on during the American Revolution when there wasn’t a battle?  Come join the 13th Regiment of the Albany County Militia 4th Company on July 5th and 6th at the Stillwater Blockhouse on Route 4 in the Village of Stillwater.  Come and take a peek behind the scenes of the American Revolution.  There will be an encampment representing everyday life for a militia and their families.
On Saturday, July 5th at 1:00 p.m., please join us for a reading of the Declaration of Independence followed by a toast to freedom.
Throughout the day, there will be arms demonstrations including the firing of cannons and ending with a mesmerizing firing demonstration at dusk where the sky lights up with the sounds of freedom firing.
There will be period clothing for children to try on so they may experience a feel for what it was like to dress in the 18th century.  After dressing, the children will have an opportunity to join the militia and learn some drills that were essential to winning the battle that changed history.
There will be a blacksmithing demonstration throughout the day.  The blacksmith will be making various tools that are used by our militia members.
The doors of the Blockhouse will be open.  Inside, you can find information showing just how important this area was to the fight for freedom.  Many of the items on display inside will not be seen anywhere else.
Please stop by the Stillwater Blockhouse on Saturday, July 5th, from 10:00 a.m. until dusk and on Sunday, July 6th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  As always, there is no admission charge to join us.  We welcome you to help us celebrate the Independence Day holiday-- 18th century style!

H.O.P.E. Pets for Adoption

Vegas is a 7-year old Boxer/Hound mix who is very sweet, very gentle, thoughtful, and well behaved. Because he loves being around people, he wants to be wherever you are. Vegas is a big snugger and a little bit of a goof ball. He has perfect potty habits; he always waits until we take him outside to "go". We are working on introducing Vegas to other dogs. It would better for him to go to a home with older kids..

Like all HOPE dogs, Vegas is neutered, up to date on his shots, and micro-chipped.

Jazz is a senior male Labrador Retriever / Rottweiler mix. He is very sociable and loves to greet everyone on his outings. Jazz is good with cats and dogs. He has never met a tennis ball he didn’t like and LOVES to swim, even leaving his beloved tennis balls behind for a chance to play in water.  Jazz seems to be very good with children, but as he has never lived with children, he would probably do better with older kids. Jazz is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He qualifies for our Seniors program – a qualified senior citizen (age 65 or above) may adopt a HOPE pet 7 years of age or older free of charge.

Check out Fiona's "Bette Davis Eyes" - a truly stunning 8 month old girl with bunny-soft fur. Fiona's favorite thing is "window shopping" for birds and squirrels. When's she's not stalking the wildlife from behind glass she is typically napping (yes, in the window and probably dreaming of squirrel soup). Fiona is very independent - happy to hang out on her own during the day she just wants a little bit of attention morning and night - except if you've got out the interactive toys which she absolutely goes crazy for! Fiona would do best if she is adopted by a family with a quiet home and would do great with a kitty companion (and a window sill). Because she was born wild she is cautious to accept new humans into her personal space and will need a loving new family willing to earn her trust— the rewards once you win her over are great — a massive purr, bedtime sleeping companion and lots and lots of leg rubs. Fiona has lived with other cats and dogs. If you have a busy life or work long hours this low-maintenance lady might be just the beautiful face to welcome you home each day.

Fiona has been spayed, is up to date on all her shots and tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV.
