Carola and Rosen Sign Letters of Intent – by Sandy McBride

They’ve been bowling almost since they could pick up a ball. They’ve been varsity bowlers for five years already and together they have racked up an impressive array of accolades. It was only fitting that Allison Carola and Lindsey Rosen sat at adjacent tables in the Mechanicville High School library two days before Thanksgiving to sign their respective letters of intent to continue their bowling careers in Division I colleges in 2014.

Mrs. Amelia “Emily” D’Alberto - 87
MECHANICVILLE – Mrs. Amelia “Emily” D’Alberto, 87, former longtime resident of Mechanicville, died Monday, Dec. 2nd at Health Alliance Hospital, Kingston, NY after a brief and sudden illness.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Noon on Friday at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, 121 No. Main St., Mechanicville. Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Thursday from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Capital District Cancer Resource Foundation, PO Box 610, Latham, NY 12110, in memory of Emily D’Alberto.

SCHAGHTICOKE – On Wednesday, Nov. 27th, Alice Keyishian passed away peacefully and with grace, surrounded by the love of her family.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11 Am at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.  Burial in Memory’s Garden, Colonie.  Calling hours at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-5 PM.

Theodore V. LaVigne – 77

CLIFTON PARK – Theodore V. LaVigne, 77, of Clifton Park, died suddenly at home, Thursday, Nov. 21, of natural causes.

Born in Mechanicville, March 31, 1931, son of the late Joseph and Irene Crotty LaVigne, Ted, who was affectionately known by family and friends as “Harpo”, will be remembered for the great love he always gave to his family.  He was a devoted family man and the best Poppy ever who always made time for others and had a heart of gold.

Ted retired from the Knolls Atomic Power Lab in Niskayuna after many years of service.   

An active member of the Mechanicville Athletic Club, Ted enjoyed spending time with his family, tinkering around his home and trying his luck at casinos.

Most important in his life were his wife of almost 50 years, two loving daughters, and three adored granddaughters, along with his siblings and their families. He is loved by so many and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife Agnes DeMicco LaVigne, daughters and their husbands Laura and Dan Chaves of Loudonville, Donna and David Franchini of Clifton Park, granddaughters Emily, Lauren and Sheridan Franchini, siblings Joseph LaVigne of Mechanicville, John and Kit LaVigne of Stillwater, Ann Marie Erno and Betty and Jim Luste all of Mechanicville, mother-in-law Mary Galka of Saratoga Springs, and in-laws Orianna LaVigne of Mechanicville, William (Sonya) DeMicco of Latham, Janice Strattner of California, Linda (Gerald) Dagostino of Clifton Park and Terri Ortega of Florida, along with nieces, and nephews and lifelong friends.

In addition to his parents, Ted was predeceased by his brother Maurice LaVigne.

 

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11 AM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.  Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Calling hours at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-5 PM.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Peter’s ALS Regional Center, 19 Warehouse Row, Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Theodore V. LaVigne.

Stanley L. O’Kosky – 92

STILLWATER – Stanley L. O’Kosky, 92, former resident and businessman of Stillwater, died Tuesday, Nov. 19th at Bay State Medical Ctr., Springfield, Ma, after a brief illness.

A native of Stillwater, born Feb. 12, 1921, son of the late Joseph and Katherine O’Kosky.

The popular owner and operator of former Pat’s Submarines, corner of Lake and Hudson Ave., Stillwater.  Previously, Stan was a longtime salesman for the former Clements Motors of Mechanicville and later Country Pontiac, Buick of Clifton Park.  A veteran of WWII, serving as a Tech Sergeant in the US Army, he served in occupied Japan at the end of the War.  Stan enjoyed conversing with customers and friends, and enjoyed life.

His wife of 53 years, Corrinne “Connie” O’Kosky died Feb 21, 1997.  He was also predeceased by his sisters Mary Brown, Ann Whitman, Josephine and Helen O’Kosky, and brothers Andrew and Edward O’Kosky.  Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

 A Burial service with military honors will be held on Monday, Nov. 25th at 2 PM at the Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Rd., Schuylerville.  There are no other services scheduled.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard,  200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville.

Dorothy Britt Santa Barbara

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Dorothy Britt Santa Barbara passed away at Saratoga Hospital on Thursday, November 21, 2013, after a long illness. She was born February 6, 1928 to the late Edward Britt and Ella (Cunningham) Britt.

Survivors include her beloved husband of sixty-four years, Tommy, and her son, Tom, of Clifton Park. Dorothy’s son, John, twin to Tom, passed away August 6, 2006. Dorothy is also survived by her four grandsons; Nicholas Santa Barbara of Long Island, Joseph Santa Barbara of MA, Matthew Santa Barbara of Albany, and Travis Santa Barbara of Clifton Park.  Nothing pleased Dorothy more than visiting and cooking for her loving grandsons. Her macaroni and cheese, meatballs, and, lets not forget her garbage bread, were gourmet delights.

Dorothy’s niece, Barbara Filardo of Rochester, brought her much joy and comfort. Barbara was more of a daughter than niece to Dorothy. Barbara’s companion Jeff Thompson, of Rochester, was only too happy to bring Barbara to Saratoga for regular family visits.  Barbara’s daughter, Courtney (Dietz) Curtis, her husband, Chris Curtis and their daughters, Rhiannon and Naomi Curtis were favorite visitors to Dorothy and Tommy’s. Rhiannon loved Aunt Dorothy’s spaghetti.

Survivors also include two daughter-in-laws; Dona (Tom) Santa Barbara of Clifton Park and Susan (John) Santa Barbara of Danvers, MA. Many hours of phone conversations took place between the three of them, The same was true for Dorothy’s niece, Mary Ann Fortune of Mechanicville. Dorothy loved to talk on the phone, she was never at a loss for words.  Extended family members also include several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In following with her wishes, there will be a private, family only gathering at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St. Mechanicville, Monday, November 25 from 3-5pm.

Friends are invited to a Funeral Mass to be held at Noon Tuesday at All Saints on the Hudson South Church 121 No. Main St., Mechanicville.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northeast Kidney Foundation 501 New Karner Road, Albany, New York 12205.

Karen L. Barnes – 67

CLIFTON PARK – Karen L. Barnes, 67, of Solomon Ave., died Saturday, Nov 23rd at St.Peter’s Hospice, Albany, after a long illness.  

 

A Gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30th from 2-4 PM at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.  Remembrances may be made to Capital District Cancer Resource Foundation, PO Box 610, Latham, NY 12110, in memory of Karen L. Barnes.

Brown’s Beach Attracting Volunteers – By Harold Wessell

TOWN OF STILLWATER, Nov. 19 ñ The rest of the story for Brown's Beach may be reminiscent of the words in the fantasy movie, "Build it, and they will come."

Right now, the story continues, and more and more, to be: "They will come and build it."

As the work parties at the longtime family spot continue week after week, in addition to individuals the list of local businesses that have something to offer to the project ñ several mentioned by Supervisor Edward Kinowski at the last Town Board meeting ñ keeps growing, as they step forward, some at great cost, to affirm in turn the Town that has sought to affirm them.
