Shenendehowa High School graduate Joshua Ellis receives Dean's Award recognition at Colgate University for spring, 2014
HAMILTON, NY (09/10/2014)(readMedia)-- Joshua Ellis, a Philosophy major from Clifton Park, NY, has been awarded the Dean's Award for academic excellence by Colgate University for the spring, 2014 semester.
Local Hamilton College Student Selected as Career Center Peer Advisor
Clinton, N.Y. – Rachel V. Beamish, daughter of James and Teresa Beamish of Melrose, and a junior at Hamilton College, has been selected as a peer advisor in Hamilton’s Career Center.
The peer advisors (PAs) are students who have been trained to critique cover letters and resumes. In addition to helping to write and critique resumes and cover letters, upon referral from a professional counselor PAs are trained to assist with learning how to network, how to help students to begin to look for career-related experience(s), and can offer advice on how to prepare for basic interviews.
Beamish, a classical studies and English major at Hamilton, is a graduate of Hoosic Valley Central School.
Norma Shoemaker Curtis – 75
Tomhannock - Norma Shoemaker Curtis was called home to the arms of her savior on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 after a long illness. She was 75.
Relatives and friends may call from 5-6:30pm on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the United Church of Cohoes, 132 Mohawk Street, Cohoes. A memorial service will be conducted at 6:30 at the church. There will be a gathering following the service downstairs in the Rev. Terrie Stine Tebordo gathering room.

John L. Whitman, Jr.
John Leroy "Roy" Whitman, Jr., of Zephyr lane passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at his residence. He was 68.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at St. Peter's Church, 895 Hudson Avenue, Stillwater. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10-11:00am prior to Mass. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Stillwater.

Richard A. Marinello – 64
MECHANICVILLE - Richard A. Marinello passed away Monday, August 25, 2014 at his home. He was 64.
In addition to his mother Josephine, Richard is survived by his two uncles, Daniel and Paul Marinello; one aunt, Esther Laurenzo and her husband Abe and many cousins.
In respect to Richard's wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.

Thousands Attend 2014 Tugboat Roundup – by M. LeMay
WATERFORD- Friday September 5th was the kickoff of the fifteenth annual Waterford Tugboat Round-Up. Twenty plus tugs of every shape and size made their way up the Mohawk River. The visitors cheered on the tugs, owners and passengers before they docked along the Erie Canal near the Waterford Visitors Center.
Friday evening started the three-day festivities filled with vendors set up along the Erie Canal. There was something for everyone; fun & games for the kids, pony rides, petty zoo, plenty of food choices provided by many local non for profit organizations, music and vendors selling things from handmade crafts to pocketbooks. An added bonus this year up on Lock 2 was a boat show sponsored by The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, exhibitors where Anderson Boats, Smith Boys & Mohawk Valley Marine.

Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley – by S. McBride
General Philip Sheridan had his orders.
“Give the enemy no rest. Do all the damage to railroads and crops you can. Carry off stock of all descriptions, and negroes, so as to prevent further planting. If the war is to last another year, we want the Shenandoah Valley to remain a barren waste”.
With these words, Union Commanding General Ulysses S. Grant made it very clear to Sheridan, recently appointed commander of the Army of the Shenandoah, that he expected the bounty of the fertile and productive Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to be destroyed, depriving the Confederate armies defending Richmond and Petersburg of food supplies and livestock. Grant was determined to bring the American Civil War to an end by whatever means it took.

Town & Village Still at Odds Over GE $ – by H. Wessell
STILLWATER AUGUST 21- In public comment, Village of Stillwater Trustee and Deputy Mayor John Basile, who is a negotiator along with Deputy Town Supervisor John Murray in discussions of the recent GE settlement, mentioned that the first payment by Village on the US Department of Agriculture issued loan of $85,000 is coming due. Without agreement on how to distribute the funds between the Town and the Village, he said water bills will cost EDU water rent for each of the users in the Village, which amounts to $110, paid twice yearly.
