Stillwater CSD Voters to Consider $23.7 Million Budget on May 19

STILLWATER - On May 19, Stillwater Central School District residents will vote on a proposed $23,712,421 budget for the 2015-16 school year. The board of education unanimously adopted the budget proposal at its meeting on Thursday, April 2, just one day after the final state budget was approved.

Palm Sunday is the traditional kickoff of Holy Week, arguably the most important week of the year for Christians.  There can be no better way to celebrate Palm Sunday, and thereby take in the spiritual meaning of Holy Week, than to immerse yourself in a stirring tale of the events of that week through readings and music in the setting of a soaring church with the late afternoon sun streaming through colorful stained glass windows.

Hoosic Valley Pops Concert – by C. Barton

Hoosic Valley-The Hoosic Valley Central School District presented a Pops Concert on Tuesday March 31st at 7pm in the High School Gym. Music students from grades 5-12 performed to a full auditorium. The combined musical talent of the Hoosic Valley band and chorus performances complimented each other throughout the program and provided an evening of entertainment to the many that came out to support the districts musical programs.

Alysa Russell Honored in Softball – by S. McBride

Alysa Russell, a 2012 graduate of Mechanicville High School now a junior at Utica College, was twice honored last week for her notable achievements in softball at a tournament in Florida.  As the shortstop for the Utica Pioneers, on March 24 she was named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week, and the following day was honored as the ECAC Upstate Player of the Week.

Alysa, a third year player at Utica, hit for .609 in the tournament, with two home runs among her 14 hits, and also had 5 runs batted in, 7 runs scored and 5 stolen bases.

TOWN OF MALTA, M arch 24___ –  A hit song by R.E.M. tells of  "The End of the World as We Know It ... (and I feel fine)."

– Not of the world, in this case; but of how things have been in a place nearby that calls itself  "The Center of the Universe."  Barring other factors such as a primary contest, this November may bring the “end” of the Malta Town Board and other officialdom as it's been known for some years ... and some people in Malta Town government may not be feeling fine.

The siege of Petersburg was in its ninth month, and the outlook for saving the Confederate capital at Richmond was becoming increasingly grim. General Robert E. Lee, with most of his supply routes cut off, had witnessed a steady decline in the morale of his Army of Northern Virginia as the siege wore on.  Men who had risked death, injury and capture on the battlefield for several years, and who still faced constant hunger, lack of shoes and clothing, were deserting in increasing numbers.  Lee knew he had to make a move. (On Page 2)

The 125th NY Regiment was part of the Army which pursued General Lee and his dwindling army westward. On April 8th they were about two miles from the little village of Appomattox Courthouse. The illustrations show the McClean house, site of the meeting of Grant and Lee, in 1865 and as I saw it a couple of years ago. (On page 14)
