Phi Beta Kappa Inducts University at Albany Students

ALBANY, NY (05/25/2016)-- Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest academic honor society, founded in 1776. It celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters invite for induction the most outstanding arts and sciences students at America's leading colleges and universities. The Alpha Alpha Chapter of New York at the University at Albany invites seniors who have a high GPA and who have taken courses across the arts and sciences to become members of this prestigious honor society.

Adam Opitz-Leewe of Clifton Park (12065)has earned the honor of being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa based upon the breadth of courses taken and the quality of the work done in those course.

Hudson Valley Community College Foundation Awards Scholarships to Local Students

TROY, NY (05/25/2016)-- Nearly 200 of Hudson Valley Community College's top students were honored with a variety of academic scholarships recently. The scholarships celebrate the depth of student excellence across the college's more than 80 academic programs.

Those receiving scholarships include:

Lauren Brodeur of Clifton Park, who was given the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship. Brodeur is studying in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography academic program.

Brianna Castracani of Waterford, who was given the Second Chance Scholarship. Castracani is studying in the Individual Studies academic program.

Victoria Filkins of Waterford, who was given the Aimee Lynn Pyskadlo Memorial Scholarship. Filkins is studying in the Nursing academic program.

Victoria Filkins of Waterford, who was given the The Women's Fund of the Capital Region Scholarship. Filkins is studying in the Nursing academic program.

Jamie Raucci of Halfmoon, who was given the The Women's Fund of the Capital Region Scholarship. Raucci is studying in the Human Services academic program.

Sarswoti Shrestha of Clifton Park, who was given the Second Chance Scholarship. Shrestha is studying in the Individual Studies academic program.

William Stevenson of Clifton Park, who was given the HonorScholar Scholarship. Stevenson is studying in the Business Administation academic program.

Stephen Urban of Clifton Park, who was given the New York Propane Gas Association Scholarship. Urban is studying in the Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration Technical Services academic program.

Gabrielle Vincent of Clifton Park, who was given the Michael J. Torello and Janet Atwater Scholarship. Vincent is studying in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography academic program.

Demonstrating Academic Excellence, Local Students Named to Assumption College Dean's List

WORCESTER, MA (05/25/2016)-- Assumption College has announced that 561 students were named to the College's undergraduate Dean's List for the spring 2016 semester.

To earn a spot on the Dean's List, Assumption students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 for a five-class, 15-credit semester. The Dean's List is announced twice every academic year, once at the completion of the fall semester, and again at the completion of the spring semester.

"The Dean's List is a recognition of students who have attained significant academic achievements," said Assumption College President Francesco Cesareo, Ph.D. "The College is proud to formally recognize its top scholars whose dedication, hard work and commitment to their studies, are forming them to become effective leaders whom others will seek to emulate.

Local residents graduate from Grove City College

GROVE CITY, PA (05/25/2016)-- The following local residents were among the 595 students who received degrees during Commencement exercises at Grove City College on May 14, 2016. Delivering this year's Commencement address was Dr. Ben Carson, renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and former 2016 Republican presidential candidate. The Class of 2016 was the second largest class in Grove City College history, coming in just shy of the 596-member Class of 2010. In recent years, the Grove City College's four-year graduation rate has climbed to 78 percent, while its six-year graduation rate has reached 85 percent. The average graduation rate in the U.S. is 59 percent.

Stillwater Police Department Arrest Blotter

05/13/16

Stillwater Police arrested Logan P. Dundon (age 18) of Stillwater and charged him with Forcible Touching (misdemeanor) and Endangering the Welfare of a Child (misdemeanor) following an incident in the Village of Stillwater involving a juvenile. He was arraigned in Stillwater Town Court and released to the Department of Probation Pre-trial services pending prosecution. He was also served with an order of protection barring all contact with the victim. The investigation and arrest was handled by 1st Sgt. Ray Cordani and Ptl. Zachary Warriner.

Stillwater Police arrested Jennifer L. Tenney (age 31) of Clifton Park and charged her with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Registration (misdemeanor), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree (misdemeanor) and Operating without Insurance (infraction) following a vehicle stop on Hudson Ave. She was processed and released to appear in Stillwater Town Court. The arrest was handled by Ptl. Alex Dunn.

Stillwater Police arrested Christopher R. McNall (age 23) of Mechanicville and charged him with Petit Larceny (misdemeanor) following a shoplifting complaint at Price Chopper in which the defendant stole items. He was processed and released with an appearance ticket for Stillwater Town Court. The arrest was handled by Ptl. Alex Dunn.

Stillwater Police arrested Cody Letourneau (age 19) of Mechanicville and charged him with Petit Larceny following an investigation involving the theft of several blankets from the porch of a residence. He was located several days later in Mechanicville and taken into custody. The blankets were recovered by police and returned to the owner. The defendant was processed and released with an appearance ticket for Stillwater Town Court. The investigation and arrest was handled by Ptl. Clayton Brownell. Stillwater Police were assisted by Mechanicville Police.

 JURY FINDS CLIFTON PARK WOMAN GUILTY AFTER TRIAL OF CRIMINAL POSSESSION OFA FORGED INSTRUMENT IN THE 2ND DEGREE IN SARATOGA COUNTY COURT

Paula F. Gretzinger, doh 10/11/74, of 6 Hawthorne Court, Clifton Park, New York was found guilty today by a Saratoga County Jury of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument  in   the Second Degree, in violation of Penal Law Section 170.25, a D Felony, following a three day trial before Saratoga County Court Judge James A. Murphy, III. The defendant was convicted for possessing an insurance check with a forged signature on July 30, 2013 at the Saratoga National Bank in Clifton Park, New  York

The jury heard testimony from four (4) witnesses over a three day period. Evidence consisted of testimony from bank employees, the New York State Police Investigator and the victim. Assistant District Attorney John D. Leggett, with assistance from Assistant District Attorney  Debra A. Kaelin, tried the case.

District Attorney Karen A. Heggen praised the work of law enforcement and the bank employees in this case indicating the importance of detecting   fraud.

The Defendant, Paula F. Gretzinger, was remanded without bail to the Saratoga County Jail until her sentencing date of July 21, 201·6. She faces a maximum period of incarceration of two and one third to seven years in  prison.

TOWN OF STILLWATER, May 19 – The Stillwater Town Board approved a new contract with Time Warner Cable when the company was on the brink of becoming  part of a new company, also including Bright House Networks,  called Charter Communications. The merger took effect when okayed by the Federal Communications Commission on May 6.

New Owner of Fiber Mill – by Harold Wessell

In other announcements or discussion, the Board and public heard a presentation by Ed McClements – a son of 107 year old Dorothy McClements, who, as reported in last week’s issue,  was just honored by the VFW post.

McClements related that he and more family members were just relocating to Stillwater...  after many years "coming home." A member of the Stillwater High graduating class of 1959, he  lived in the Town thirty-seven and a half years, then in southern California 37 years, and now is back  home.

Rebecca Gifford Named to Lasell College Dean's List for Spring 2016

NEWTON, MA (05/24/2016)-- Lasell College in Newton, MA recently named Rebecca Gifford of Schaghticoke, NY to the Lasell College Dean's List for the Spring 2016 semester.

Gifford, whose major is Entrepreneurship, is a member of the class of 2019 and was among 760 students honored in the Spring 2016 semester.

Madison Fama makes the Dean's List at Coastal Carolina University

CONWAY 28528, SC (05/24/2016)-- Madison Fama, a sophomore majoring in sociology, from Clifton Park, NY, (12065) was among approximately 1,940 students at Coastal Carolina University who made the Spring 2016 Dean's List.

Local Resident Graduates from Hamilton College

Clinton, N.Y. -- Rachel V. Beamish, daughter of James and Teresa Beamish of Melrose, received a bachelor of arts degree from Hamilton College on Sunday, May 22, at the Commencement ceremony concluding the college's 204th year.

Hamilton awarded 489 diplomas in the ceremony. American entrepreneur Peter Thiel, co-founder of worldwide online payments system PayPal, delivered the Commencement address.

Keene State Announces the 2016 Spring Dean's List

KEENE, NH (05/23/2016)-- Keene State College is pleased to announce that 1,323 students have been named to the spring 2016 dean's list. To qualify for the dean's list, Keene State College undergraduate students must be enrolled in a degree program, and must have completed a minimum of six credit hours in the semester, receiving no failing or incomplete grades.
