Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks All-Star Basketball Event – by S. McBride
It was a day of fun and excitement for some very special boys and girls in our communities on Saturday, March 7, when the Mechanicville/Stillwater Elks Lodge #1403 sponsored an All-Star Basketball Event at the Mechanicville High School gymnasium for children with special needs, an event that gave these kids an opportunity to show what they can do on a basketball court.

This Month in the Civil War – March, 1865 Closing In – by S. McBride
On the morning of March 4, 1865, the day when Abraham Lincoln would be sworn in for his second term as President of the United States, it rained. In fact, it had rained nearly every day of the month just past. But the incessant downpour did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the 50,000 citizens who had gathered in front of the Capitol building in Washington, with its newly-completed dome topped by the statue of Freedom, to hear his inaugural address.

Sarah Meisel Signs Letter of Intent – by S. McBride
Before a large gathering of administrators, teachers, coaches, teammates, classmates and friends on Tuesday afternoon, Sarah Meisel of Mechanicville High School signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division II soccer at Cedarville University in Ohio.

World Day of Prayer to be Celebrated on March 6 – By Sandy McBride
The annual World Day of Prayer gathering in our communities will be held on Friday, March 6, at the All Saints on the Hudson Chapel in the Parish Hall on Grove Street in Mechanicville, in the former Assumption Hall, at 1 p.m.

Hawks & Owls at Mechanicville Library – by S. McBride
More than 60 people, from toddlers to senior citizens, braved the cold February wind on Thursday to take the opportunity to meet up close and personal some fascinating birds of prey at the Mechanicville District Public Library. Mike Gaylo of Hawks, Owls and Wildlife in Buskirk, a biologist, rehabilatator and licensed falconer with 35 years’ experience working with these beautiful birds, introduced four of them to the gathering in the library’s presentation room.

This Month in the Civil War: February 1864 – by S. McBride
For the rebellious Confederate States of America, the fortunes of war had taken a nosedive. Savannah had fallen. So had Atlanta and Nashville. With the defeat at Fort Fisher on the North Carolina coast, the port of Wilmington was embattled. Petersburg was under siege. The Shenandoah Valley was in ruins. The Union controlled the Mississippi River. Rebel soldiers were deserting by the hundreds.
