Malta Approves GloFo Changes

By Harold Wessell

MALTA AND STILLWATER, August 20 – Longtime Malta Supervisor David Meager touted his Town so often as "The Center of the Universe," that the subtitle became common parlance. If he were in office today, he might well be laying claim to the End of the Rainbow as well, for his Town and its co-host to the Luther Forest Technology Campus, the Town of Stillwater.

The Malta board on Monday approved a potential major turning point in the fortunes of GlobalFoundries – and of the Towns – granting zoning amendments to the company that clear the way for a Fab 8.2 – whose physical size... including clean room almost twice the seize... price tag size, at $14.7 billion.. and expected boost to employment at the tech campus would easily eclipse that generated by Fab 8.1 – sending employment soaring to about 6,700 by 2020.

NEW YORK STATE’S STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OFFERS HUNDREDS OF INTERNSHIPS

Students Encouraged to Apply to Meet Fall Deadline @ nysinternships.com

Civil Service Commissioner Jerry Boone announced today that New York State has hundreds of internships available, and reminded college students to apply for Fall semester internships before the application deadline on September 3, 2013.

New York State created a one-stop website - www.nysinternships.com - that allows students to view and apply for internship opportunities across an array of state agencies both downstate and upstate.

The website is one component of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s New New York Leaders initiative, which is focused on attracting new talent to state government through both a fellowship program and an internship program.  With the internship website, applicants can view job descriptions, create profiles, specify interests, and upload resumes, writing samples and letters of recommendation.  Students can apply for multiple internships at the same time.

“The internship program is designed to attract and mentor a new generation of talented leaders for New York State,” said Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.  “I continue to encourage talented college students to consider devoting time to public service while acquiring valuable skills and marketable work experience.”

“New York State continues to offer a wide variety of opportunities across numerous professional occupations,” said Civil Service Commissioner Jerry Boone.  “Governor Cuomo’s internship program offers opportunities for hands on experience in finance, engineering, public relations, information technology and health care, as well as a host of other professional disciplines.”

The program is open to resident graduate and undergraduate students as well as students who attend schools in other states, but reside in New York.  Opportunities include both paid and unpaid positions.  Internships may include academic credit depending on the policy of the educational institution.

Kate Hewitt & John Reynolds: A Civil War Love Story

By Sandy McBride

John Fulton Reynolds was a career soldier.  He was a West Point graduate, an experienced commander who so impressed President Abraham Lincoln with his ability as a military man that the president offered him command of the Army of the Potomac as it pursued General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate Army of Virginia on their northward move in June of 1863.  Because Lincoln would not assure him there would be no political interference with the job, Reynolds politely declined and remained in the field.  He was well-respected, a much-loved leader of men and married to his job.  There was no time for romance . . . or so his family, friends and comrades-in-arms thought.

They would learn otherwise.
