Hillcrest & Mechanicville FD Team Up – by M. LeMay

HALFMOON OCTOBER 5 – On Sunday Hillcrest Fire Department held their long awaited and well deserved open house of their new station. Their doors were open to the public from noon – 5:00 and throughout the day over two hundred people walked through to get tours of the new station, see the apparatus, ask questions and even get a great meal catered by The Ugly Rooster. Town officials spoke and congratulated the Chiefs, Commissioners and members for 50 yrs. of service to their community and thanked them for all that they do on a daily basis for our community. Being a volunteer firefighter isn’t a part time thing were you pick and choose when you leave your home for a call, these men and woman volunteer their time and miss family parties, holidays and get out of bed in the middle of the night to rush off and put their own lives in danger at times to save the lives of complete strangers.

WATERFORD OCTOBER 8 – October is Fire Prevention Month and on Wednesday evening The Waterford Fire Departments teamed up with Northside Fire District, the Waterford Police Department, the Waterford Rescue Squad and new this year; Momentive Performance Company’s Fire Brigade to hold their annual open house at The J.W. Ford Hose Fire House for an evening of informative Fire Prevention.

This Month in the Civil War: Cedar Creek – by S. McBride

   Union General Philip Sheridan had been chosen to lead the Army of the Shenandoah in an effort to sever the lifeline sustaining the south, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, as General Ulysses S Grant put a stranglehold on the Confederacy with the siege of Petersburg and General William T. Sherman closed off Atlanta. In September of 1864, Sheridan had won two major battles at Winchester and Fisher’s Hill.

Roosevelt Returns: October 1940 – by P. Loatman

Tuesday, October 7, marked the seventy-fourth anniversary of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s second and final trip to the Mechanicville area. Things had changed dramatically since his initial trip here on October 17, 1929. Then, the newly-elected Governor was pre-occupied helping Mechanicville Mayor George O. Slingerland organize ceremonies marking the transfer of Saratoga battlefield properties to the State. Yet, a few days later, the New York Stock Market crashed, ultimately plunging the nation into the Depression and thrusting the young Empire State governor into the White House where he would spend the rest of his career confronting both domestic economic devastation and the rise of fascist dictatorships abroad.

Waterford Museum’s 50th Anniversary – by H. Wessell

Also Tuesday, the Board honored the Waterford Museum and Cultural Center at its 50th anniversary. Director Paul Archambault, who began his position in July, spoke and the following is taken from his remarks.\
"What we're celebrating this year is really an historic preservation story. It's not only the founding of a museum, but also of saving a house:" the 1830s Hugh White house, home of a prominent Waterford Citizen, located at 2 Museum Lane, an historic Federal style revival house that is now home to the center.

Valley Falls Library Offers Anti-Bullying Program – by C. Barton

Valley Falls-The Valley Falls Free Library hosted a community education program for adults relating to the topic of bullying. The educational workshop was offered on September 23rd and October 6th.  The support of the Town of Pittstown, State Senator Kathleen Marchione and the Valley Falls United Methodist Church allowed this program to be free of charge for the community.

Yolanda M. Palmer – 76

Yolanda M. Palmer - 76

MECHANICVILLE – Yolanda M. Palmer, 76, of County Route 75, died early Saturday morning, October 11, 2014 at Samaritan Hospital as a result of pancreatic cancer.  Born May 19, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Madalena Palmer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 11AM at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, 121 N Main St., Mechanicville, NY 12118 with burial to follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery.  A Calling Hour will be held prior to the mass from 10-11AM at the church.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’sResearch Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 in loving memory of Yolanda M. Palmer.
