Dennis Latham Retires as Stillwater Police Chief – by Sandy McBride
On June 30, Dennis Latham will step down as Chief of Police of the Stillwater Police Department after 30 years in that position. For Dennis, it will be a bittersweet moment. It may be time to move on to the next stage of a busy and productive life, but leaving the department which he helped to found 38 years ago, and the fellow officers with whom he shares a mutual respect and sense of camaraderie after so many years of facing so many challenges, is not easy for him.

Mechanicville’s D.A.R.E. Race – by Sandy McBride
122 runners and two dozen walkers gathered last Wednesday to participate in the 25th annual DARE race and fun walk in downtown Mechanicville. Kevin Connors of the Connors Agency, an original sponsor of the event, was pleased to announce that Joe Kelly had run the race for the 25th time, the only entrant to do all twenty-five. Mr. Kelly is more than 80 years old, and Kevin says he knocked two full seconds off his 2013 time! He was beaten in his age division by fellow octogenarian Richard Schumacher by less than a minute. And trailing by not a lot was the winner of the 90 plus division, Virginia Donahue.

Hoosic Valley Stampede – by Christine Barton
Schaghticoke-The Hoosic Valley Stampede football and cheerleading program is a private not for profit sports program for kids in grades K-6 in the Hoosic Valley community. The program is also a member of the Northeast Youth Football League (NYFL). The NYFL also includes teams from the surrounding areas of Stillwater, Mechanicville Cambridge, Greenwich and Granville. The Hoosic Valley Stampede is sustained solely through fundraising efforts. The financial success of the program is supported heavily through the generosity of local volunteers as well as community and businesses donations. The Stampede program consists of Flag Cheer, Flag Football, Junior and Senior Tackle. While the Stampede program is independent of the Hoosic Valley School District, the sports programs in the area do work closely together.

Malta Passes Right-to-Farm – by H. Wessell
MALTA, June 2 ñ The Malta Town Board on Wednesday adopted the Town's new Agricultural Protection Overlay District Law.
The law was several years in the making, in a collaboration of the Town's Open Space, Agriculture and Trails Committee, chaired by David Haight, and Town Parks and Recreation Director Audrey Ball.
Ball related how in 2009 the Town completed its Agricultural Enhancement Strategy aimed at preserving farmland; and on recommendation of the Open Space Committee, the Town Board adopted the State's new Right to Farm Law locally.
