Round Lake’s Gingerbread Houses – by Lauren Peterson

Round Lake is almost entirely made up of gingerbread cottages designed in the Victorian Era. This was a style popular in America in the late nineteenth century, mostly among the emerging middle class. The Victorian Era is considered to range from 1837, when Queen Victoria I began her reign in England, to 1914. Several coinciding factors aided the explosion of Victorian architecture in the West, not least of all the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which allowed all manner of supplies to be transported back and forth across the states, an exhibition in Paris which brought many architectural influences to light for America, and most importantly, the explosion of the Industrial Revolution, which had been going on for several decades by this time.

Brown’s Beach Still Needs Volunteers – by H. Wessell

TOWN  OF STILLWATER, May 5: Road work and  restoration continue in earnest at Brown's Beach town park. "I'm here right now," said Town Supervisor  Edward Kinowski to the Express Monday afternoon;  "and we've got truck after truck pulling in with loads of stone -- for more roadway;  and they're really going strong. Dewatering is a big thing underway, and getting to the upper building so I can  start to prepare that for Menetto"  [PowerSports, new marina operator].

He explained that the deck of the main building, due to the way it was attached to the building, has been affected by water, frost heaves, age and lack of care, so that "we're going to restore that area to a better condition ñ by making it new."

Finding the Right Pre-School – by Jennifer Dugan

Preschool registration is already in full swing for next year as the regular school year starts to wind down. With so many options available, parents may be asking themselves what exactly they should be looking for when choosing the best preschool for their little one.

I still remember meeting the registrar of the preschool that both of my children went on to attend. I was hugely pregnant with my daughter at the time, which added a whole other element of “fun” to the process! As a first time mom, soon to be mom of two, I agonized over the preschool decision. I was determined to find the “perfect” preschool, the one that would ensure life-long success and guarantee my son’s future acceptance into Ivy League schools- and it had to all happen in a fun, nurturing, positive environment, of course. No pressure there!

It’s become a tradition here in our communities for the All Saints on the Hudson Youth Council to embrace the cause of a person in each community each year who needs financial as well as moral support by putting on a benefit basketball extravaganza.
