Battle of Chattanooga – By Sandy McBride
Staggering losses by both sides in the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia in September of 1863 had the leaders of both the United States of America and the rebellious Confederate States of America searching for answers. 127,000 men had converged on the valley of the Chickamauga River in the latter days of September in 1863, and more than 34,000 of them had been killed, wounded, captured or just gone missing. June, 1863: The Battle of Brandy Station – By Sandy McBride
Encouraged by the success of his army in defeating Union forces at Chancellorsville, and convinced that the stifling heat of the approaching summer would force Ulysses S. Grant to give up his quest to capture Vicksburg in the west, in mid-May of 1863 General Robert E. Lee presented a new idea to President Jefferson Davis and the Confederate government. He would invade the north.
Confederate Secretary of War James Seddon proposed sending General James Longstreet, one of Lee’s most trusted commanders, into Mississippi to reinforce General John Pemberton at Vicksburg. Lee, however, disagreed. Longstreet was 1,000 miles from Vicksburg and the southern railroads were mangled, making it very difficult to move a large number of men and needed materiel to the west. If Pemberton could hold out long enough, Lee theorized, Grant would give up on Vicksburg.

Rita Costanzi, internationally renowned harpist, composer, actor and teacher performed an array of music ranging from delicate and lilting to powerful and moving. Telling the story behind each piece she would play, Ms. Costanzi played masterfully some of the greatest compositions for the harp ever written.

Post #490 Remembers Pearl Harbor – By Sandy McBride
Earl J. Manning Post #490 of the American Legion will commemorate Pearl Harbor Day on Friday, December 7 at 5 p.m. with a ceremony inside the post and the traditional laying of a decorated wreath outside at the Veterans’ Memorial immediately following.
Seventy-one years ago, on December 7, 1941, on a peaceful Sunday morning, the Japanese bombarded the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. That brazen assault did, in effect, as even the Japanese hierarchy acknowledged, awaken a sleeping giant. In the face of fear, grief and anger, the American people came together, joined forces and did what needed to be done to defeat an enemy which had been bold enough to attack us on our own turf.
