Amber Howe of Stillwater named to Harding University dean's list

SEARCY, AR (01/01/2015)(readMedia)-- Stillwater resident Amber Howe, a senior accounting major at Harding University, is among more than 1,200 University students included on the dean's list for grades achieved during the fall 2014 semester.

Keene State Announces the 2014 Fall Dean's List

KEENE, NH (12/24/2014)(readMedia)-- 1,467 students have been named to the fall 2014 dean's list at Keene State College. .

To qualify for the dean's list, Keene State undergraduates must be enrolled in a degree program and must have completed a minimum of six credit hours in the semester, receiving no failing or incomplete grades. Students must achieve a 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale to earn dean's list honors.

Carol Olsen Lavazzo – 68

Carol Olsen Lavazzo - 68

MECHANICVILLE – Carol Olsen Lavazzo, 68, of Broadway, died suddenly at home, Saturday morning, Dec. 27th, after being stricken.  Carol had battled breast cancer and  respiratory issues for some time.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, Jan 2nd at 1 PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.  Entombment in Saratoga National Cemetery. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Friday from 11:30 AM to 1 PM.Remembrances may be made to the Mechanicville Fire Dept., for their faithful fire and ambulance services over the years.

Looking Back on 2014 – by S. McBride

I am in my 9th year of writing feature stories and personal interest articles for the Express, the newspaper that has for many more years than that presented the history, the events, the happenings and the activities of the people who make our small town world what it is.  I now have nearly 700 of those stories logged in my book, and I never cease to marvel at and appreciate the good people and the good happenings which provide me with the stories I have been privileged to share with Express readers.

Mechanicville Receives Grant for Central Ave Sidewalk – by T. Mahoney

MECHANICVILLE- Supervisor Tom Richardson announced that Mechanicville has received a $100,000 grant from New York State to build the sidewalks on Central Ave. State Senator Kathy Marchione worked with Richardson to find the money to make this possible.

Anthony F. DeSieno – 93

MECHANICVILLE – Anthony F. DeSieno, 93, of Saratoga Ave., passed away Friday evening, Dec. 26th, at Wesley Health Care in Saratoga Springs, after a brief illness.

A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Tuesday at Noon at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 North Main St., Mechanicville. A burial, with military honors, will take place at the Saratoga NationalCemetery.
Calling hours will be at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 South Main St., Mechanicville, on Monday from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Mrs. Hazel Westfall Valetta – 86

MECHANICVILLE – Mrs. Hazel Westfall Valetta, 86, of Broadway, died Saturday Dec. 27th after a short illness.

Private Services held at the convenience of the family.

Burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Mechanicville.

There are no calling hours.

Central Avenue Bridge is Now Open

MECHANICVILLE DECEMBER 18- At 6:30 PM Central Ave was open to all traffic. An hour earlier Central Ave. had been open to north bound traffic only. Mayor Dennis Baker expressed his thanks that Central Ave. was now open. He hoped that the merchants in Mechanicville would begin to see an increase in business now that Central is open, The bridge project on Central began on June 18, It was slated for a completion date of November 28. Completion dates were postponed to a skeptical public. The last date offered for completion by The Saratoga County DPW was "sometime the week of December 15th." This time they got it.}

Christmas on the Farm – by S. McBride

   Tom and I have celebrated more than fifty Christmases together.  Most were joyous, happy and festive, some were sad and heart-wrenching, some were trying in various ways.  But we love Christmas.  The reason, the traditions, the celebrations are always there, memories lingering in each ornament, each decoration, each saved Christmas message from years past, each photograph of our growing family together at Christmas.
