Tentative Saratoga Co. Budget – By Harold Wessell

BALLSTON SPA, October 31 – Despite costs still rising, it will cost the owner of a $200,000 home in Saratoga County only a couple bucks more – literally – to keep the government going in 2014.

"For the past three years, Saratoga County has taken a very aggressive approach toward reducing the expense side of our budget," said County Administrator Spencer Hellwig III at a press conference Thursday presenting the 2014 Tentative County Budget. "We are now beginning to see the fruits of those labors.  Our operating budget is stabilizing, and in 2014 we will have our lowest anticipated usage of fund balance in seven years.  At the same time, our tax rates are still among the lowest in the state.  The 2014 Tentative Budget will continue to implement a decisive program to restore Saratoga County's financial stability."

Rep. Giffords Attends NEACA Gun Show – Michael Bielawski

Saratoga – Two years ago, former US Representative Gabrielle Giffords was victim to a gun-shot wound to the head at a shooting near Tucsan, Arizona.  This past Sunday, she and her husband former astronaut Mark Kelly, attended the Saratoga Springs gun show.  As NY State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman put it “Our two national heroes who are walking into space where there are not a lot of folks that are brave enough to try and bring the two sides together.”

Saratoga Gun Show Attracts Attorney General

By Michael Bielawski

SARATOGA – One of the hottest debates these days without question is the gun debate.  And New York State is at the center of this debate especially since the passage of the Safe Act.  In a nutshell, the Safe Act limits rounds that may legally be loaded in a firearm at any one time (to seven rounds), among other provisions about sales and background checks.
At this gun show, largely to ensure the Safe Act was followed, was New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.  Some assumed the appearance might be awkward or even confrontational.  As it turns out, “The Attorney General was quite pleased with the way we run our shows” said David Petronis, the gun show operator.  He wasn’t there long, but he visited all the tables and embraced an atmosphere that was likely very different from his liberal base.

No Progress This Month on North Sewer Plant Plans – By Harold Wessell

HALFMOON, May 22 – Saratoga County Sewer commissioners will not be able to act further on prospects of a new, north treatment plant until at least the June 26 meeting, because of a one-month delay voted at the April meeting.

Accordingly Executive Director Chad Cooke could only confirm at the May 22 meeting that, based on last month's meeting he has issued the requested delay pushing back the due date for proposals to June 6, from the original due date of May 9.

Saratoga County to Air Landfill Options – By Harold Wessell

BALLSTON SPA, May 7 – Saratoga County's Public Works Committee now has in hand

proposals from three major landfill operators interested in taking on private ownership of, or leasing, its never-utilized landfill built in the Town of Northumberland in the 1990s. The proposals, contained in a report by Hans Arnold of consultants Gerhardt, LLC, were developed in response to the County's Request for Proposal (RFP) issued beginning in April 2012, with responses submitted last October.

Arnold, who was formerly director of the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority,   said that the full report would shortly be available on County website www.saratogacountyny.gov.

Sewer District May Produce Some of It’s Own Electricity – by Harold Wessell

HALFMOON, March 27 – Saratoga County Sewer District officials will be investigating the possibility of constructing a solar farm on the property of its projected second, northerly treatment plant in the Town of Northumberland.

The deed for the plant was expected to be executed during the week following district commissioners’ March 27 meeting, according to District Attorney Robert Wilcox that day.     Commission Chairman William Davis made the request based on what he had heard about the Town of Clifton Park's recent contract with solar power developers Heliosage, of Charlotte, VA. "There's money out there, NYSERDA [New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, with offices in Malta]) gives about $3 million per project. As some funding available to assist.
