Academic Departments at Hudson Valley Community College Honor Top Students
Students Graduate from St. Lawrence University

CANTON, NY (05/28/2015)(readMedia)-- The following students received bachelor degrees from St. Lawrence University during commencement ceremonies held on May 17 in Canton, New York.

Henry L. Heed of Clifton Park. Heed received the degree of bachelor of arts. Heed is a member of the Class of 2015 and majored in English. Heed graduated from Shenendehowa High School.

Alaina E. Larkin of Clifton Park. Larkin received the degree of bachelor of science Magna cum laude. Larkin is a member of the Class of 2015 and majored in international economics-multilanguage and mathematics. Larkin graduated from Shenendehowa High School.

Four honorary degree recipients spoke during St. Lawrence University's Commencement, including award-winning songwriter Judy Hart Angelo, hedge fund pioneer John M. Angelo, chair of the Baseball Hall of Fame Jane Clark, and garden historian Peter Hatch.

 

TROY, NY (05/29/2015)(readMedia)-- Nearly 200 of the college's top students were honored with a variety of academic achievement awards recently. The awards celebrate the depth of student excellence across the college's more than 75 academic programs.

Matthew Roy of Waterford, was given the Kintz Plastics Award, which is given to the graduating Manufacturing Technical Systems student who has the highest grade point average. The award is handed out by the Automotive, Manufacturing and Electrical Engineering academic program.

Melanie Chapman of Clifton Park, was given the Academic Excellence in Anatomy and Physiology Award, which is given to a student who has shown particularly high achievement in the study of anatomy and physiology. The award is handed out by the Biology, Chemistry and Physics academic program.

Amanda Frodey of Stillwater, was given the Academic Excellence in Anatomy and Physiology Award, which is given to a student who has shown particularly high achievement in the study of anatomy and physiology. The award is handed out by the Biology, Chemistry and Physics academic program.

Jason Zeledon of Clifton Park, was given the Stephen L. Hyatt Award, which is given to the graduating students who have the highest academic average in sciences over their first three semesters of a degree program at Hudson Valley Community College. The award is handed out by the Biology, Chemistry and Physics academic program.

Kevin Pallozzi of Schaghticoke, was given the Eastman Kodak Engineering Award, which is given to a student studying in the area of civil, mechanical or industrial technology who exhibits outstanding academic achievement and is transferring or continuing his/her education. The award is handed out by the Civil, Construction, Industrial and Mechanical Technologies academic program.

Jessica Noeth of Waterford, was given the Forensic Science Award, which is given to the most outstanding graduate of the Forensic Science Studies graduating class. The award is handed out by the Criminal Justice, Forensic Science and Public Administration Studies academic program.

Jennifer Hoech of Clifton Park, was given the Proctor & Gamble Award for Excellence in Preventive Dentistry, which is awarded to a student who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the behavioral aspects of patient-centered care. The award is handed out by the Dental Hygiene academic program.

Arati Singh of Clifton Park, was given the Troy Dental Society Club Scholarship, which is given to a resident of the greater Capital Region who showed academic excellence in the Dental Hygiene program. The award is handed out by the Dental Hygiene academic program.

Alexander Wollyung of Clifton Park, was given the English Department Four L Award: Celebrating Language, Literature, Learning and Laughter, which is presented to a graduating senior in a Liberal Arts or Individual Studies program who has excelled in English. The award is handed out by the English, Foreign Languages and English As A Second Language academic program.

Kaylie Willsey of Valley Falls, was given the Award for Academic Excellence and Outstanding Service in the Broadcast Communications Program, which is given to the most accomplished student in the Broadcast Communications graduating class. The cash prize is made possible through a generous donation by the New School, Hudson Valley's partner in the delivery of the Broadcast Communications degree program. The award is handed out by the Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Broadcast Communications academic program.

Sarah Barnes of Clifton Park, was given the Award for Academic Excellence and Outstanding Service in the Fine Arts Program, which is given to the most accomplished student in the Fine Arts graduating class. The award is handed out by the Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Broadcast Communications academic program.

Rebecca Hankle of Johnsonville, was given the Patricia Jablonski Award for Caring, Compassion and Commitment, which is given to an outstanding student in the Nursing class in honor of emeritus faculty member Patricia Jablonski. The award is handed out by the Nursing academic program.

Allison Ford of Mechanicville, was given the Award for Excellence in Student Teaching, which is given to a graduating Early Childhood student who has shown excellence in the student teaching portion of their studies. The award is handed out by the Teacher Preparation academic program.

Jerome was a member of the team and competed in sprints and hurdles. The Red Dragons won the SUNYAC indoor championship and was second at the outdoor championship this year.

Shenendehowa High School Graduate Honored at University Awards Luncheon

SELINSGROVE, PA (06/01/2015)(readMedia)-- Parker Adel, of Clifton Park, received the Outstanding Senior Musician Award at Susquehanna University's annual student awards luncheon, held each May in the days leading up to commencement.

This award is given to a senior who represents the finest in music performance.

Adel was a music performance major in the Class of 2015. A 2011 graduate of Shenendehowa, he is the son of Paul Adel and Leticia Ortega.

MECHANICVILLE – Carmine A. Taglione, 66, died Saturday morning May 23rd at home, in the safe and loving company of his family, and after a long and courageous battle with melanoma.

Local Students Inducted into Tau Alpha Pi Academic Honor Society at Hudson Valley Community College

TROY, NY (05/20/2015)(readMedia)-- Eighteen high-achieving students were recently inducted into the Tau Alpha Pi academic honor society at Hudson Valley Community College.

To gain entrance into the honor society, students are required to rank among the top four percent of an institution's total engineering technology enrollment.

Tau Alpha Pi is a national organization with affiliate chapters located on the campuses of many of the country's leading technical colleges and universities. Both associate and baccalaureate degree students are eligible.

Mechanicville – Stillwater School Budget and Election Results

Mechanicville Voters Approve $23 Million Budget for 2015-16 by a Wide Margin

Mechanicville City School District voters approved the 2015-16 school budget Tuesday night, with 77.5 percent of voters supporting the $23,067,695 school budget.

This is the fourth consecutive school budget the Mechanicville City School District has put to voters with a tax increase has fallen below the state tax “cap.”

“I would like to thank all of the residents who came out to cast their votes on the school budget. Every vote is important and it shows the value the community places on education,” Dr. Michael J. McCarthy, superintendent of schools, said. “This school budget maintains and enhances the great programs we have in Mechanicville, allows us to continue to reduce class sizes, and provides funding for us to send students to even more college and career readiness programing.”

In all, 383 residents voted in favor of the budget and 111 voted against.

Voters also approved a $260,000 proposal for the purchase of two school buses.

The Board of Education Election saw incumbent Joseph Waldron re-elected and first-time runner Michael Raucci elected as well. Raucci ran unopposed for the seat formerly held by Joseph Micklas, who decided to not seek re-election. Waldron and Raucci will serve three year terms.

 

Stillwater Budget Approved by Voters

Building maintenance propositions pass, three elected to board May 19, 2015 – On Tuesday, May 19, Stillwater residents voted to approve the district's 2015-16 proposed budget with 389 voting in favor and 109 voting against it.

The $23.7 million budget carries a 4.18 percent spending increase over the current year and a 3.5 percent increase in the tax levy. Tax rates are estimated to increase by less than 2 percent (the district will set the actual tax rates in August).

 

ADDITIONAL PROPOSITIONS

By a margin of 385 to 98, voters passed a proposition to establish a capital reserve fund of $100,000 to make general improvements and repairs to the HVAC systems, and electrical and plumbing equipment at the elementary school, middle school and transportation building. By a margin of 375 to 100, voters passed an additional proposition to expend the monies in the capital reserve fund of $100,000 to make the repairs. Residents also elected Michael Toleman, Timothy Hems and Jon Mueller to the Stillwater Board of Education. The results are as follows: Michael Toleman (374 votes), Timothy Hems (350 votes), John Mueller (328 votes) and Shay Valigorsky (193 votes).

Community Pre-School Raises Money for St. Jude’s

MECHANICVILLE MAY 12- At 10 AM 2nd Avenue was closed to traffic from Park to Broadway. For the 15th year the Community Preschool children bicycled on 2nd Ave. to raise money for St. Jude's Hospital. School director Bette Ann Thompson reported that the children have raised $30,000 in the previous 14 bicycle rides. St. Jude's Hospital needs $1.8 miooion per day to operate. Thompson said they are very appreciative of the donations from Mechanicville.

The Mechanicville Stillwater Elks Lodge held its annual scholarship dinner to honor students from the three local school districts  Mechanicville, Stillwater, and Hoosic Valley. The program was a combined event to recognize the Elks Honor Students from the 2014-2015 school year and the awarding of the Elks Scholarship to one graduating senior from each school. The event was attended by the students, their families, school administrative and guidance staff, and Elks officers and members.
