Several years ago the dream of restoring the Tower came alive when local residents and business owners teamed with the City of Mechanicville to shore up the building, refurbish the first floor and open the downstairs office as the home for the Mechanicville \'96 Stillwater Area Chamber of Commerce.

March 7, 2016 – Congratulations to the students who were given Character Education Leader Awards at the Elementary Morning Program Assembly on Feb. 29. The character education trait for the month of February was "honesty."

The current political debate surrounding immigration serves as a reminder that such disputes have arisen many times in our past. As President John F. Kennedy stated in “A Nation of Immigrants,” more than 45 million immigrants had come to America by 1965, almost all of them without any documentation. Ironically, the only “documented aliens” entering American shores in our early history were African slaves. However, given the fact that they were deemed chattel, they were listed as nameless items of property to be sold rather than as individuals who had had any choice in emigrating.

RENSSELAER COUNTY - As of March 7, 2016 the Rensselaer County Department of Health has collected water samples from 60 samples including 44 private wells in the Town of Petersburgh. Results are expected in the next week or so and will be passed on directly to the individual home owners. Further testing is currently taking place. The geographic range of the testing will continue to expand until PFOA readings fall to an acceptable level.

HALFMOON – On Saturday February 27th The Clifton Park - Halfmoon Fire District No. 1 in conjunction with the Clifton Park - Halfmoon Fire Company, held its annual inspection dinner at the Mohawk River County Club in Rexford. Two hundred plus attendees were on hand to enjoy the evening and to honor the fire fighters. Officers, Chiefs and Company officers were sworn in by Clifton Park Supervisor Phil Barrett and Halfmoon Supervisor Kevin Tollisen.

BALLSTON SPA, March 7 – The Saratoga County Supervisors' Equalization and Assessment wants to see some continuation of a tax exemption for homeowners who are Cold War veterans– and better awareness of the one that has been available.

The Department of Environmental Conservation reminds New Yorkers that, with warming temperatures and dry conditions, residential brush burning in towns with less than 20,000 residents is prohibited from March 16 through May 14.

Members of the Tenandeho Canoe Association staged their first creek cleanup last Saturday in preparation for the April 3 whitewater derby. Committee members were able to remove debris for the first half of the course. They were aided by low water conditions that exposed obstacles from previous races. Plans are now underway to complete the cleanup next Saturday. Anyone wishing to help with the cleanup can meet with the race committee at the McDonald's parking lot in Mechanicville at 9:00am, this Saturday, March 19.

STILLWATER – Sylvia Brookley Luther, 86, of Lake St., died Saturday evening March 12th at St. Peter’s Hospital, in the loving company of her family. A native and lifelong resident of Stillwater, born March 16,1929, daughter of the late Loren and Ethel Wiltsey Brookley, and widow of Edgar “Bud” Luther, Jr. who died in 2001.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 10:30 AM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville. Burial in Saratoga National Cemetery.
