Five Students Named as Recipients of SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

TROY, NY (04/05/2016)-- Five Hudson Valley Community College students were recently recognized with one of the highest honors bestowed on a student in the State University of New York system.

Local recipients of the prestigious honor included:

Taylar Delisle of Mechanicville. Delisle, who is studying in the Liberal Arts and Science: Humanities and Social Science program, is president and captain of the Cheerleading and Pep Squad Club and has actively worked to promote student involvement in campus events. She has twice been named to the President's List, which notes students who have a term grade point average above 3.5. Outside of campus, she is an assistant coach for Watervliet Pop Warner and has volunteered for several charities, including Avery's Angels, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, a sexual violence awareness campaign.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers 80 degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of nearly 12,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training. Hudson Valley has more than 75,000 alumni.

Kimberlee Kocienski of Schaghticoke, N.Y., Hands in All-New England and/or All-ECAC Indoor Track & Field Performance

WORCESTER, MA (04/05/2016)-- Kimberlee Kocienski finished in the top eight in at least one of the three regional indoor track and field championships to earn All-New England and/or All-ECAC honors this past winter.

Mrs. Madelyn M. Matala – 91

SCHAGHTICOKE – Mrs. Madelyn M. Matala, 91, of Route 40, died suddenly at her home, Sunday, April3rd, after an apparent cardiac event.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at 11:30 Am at St. Nicholas Church, Cohoes.

Burial in St. Nicholas Cemetery in Colonie. Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Friday from 4-7 PM

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to any of following: Alzheimer’s Assoc, American Heart Assoc, or Adirondack Save A Stray, in memory of Madelyn Matala.

Elks All Star Basketball – by Sandy McBride

It was “community” at its best when the second annual Elks All-Star Basketball Event took place in the Mechanicville High School gym on Saturday afternoon. Planned and organized by Ashley Kucharski and Kaile Kenyon with the aid and support of Mechanicville/Stillwater Elks Lodge #1403, this event gives children with disabilities, challenges and limitations the opportunity to participate in skills-building exercises and drills on the basketball court, and have a whole lot of fun doing it. 37 boys and girls from our local communities . . .

Tomhannock Reservoir Clean Up – by C. Barton

Tomhannock Reservoir- On Saturday April 16th from 9am to noon the Rensselaer Land Trust (RLT) in partnership with the Hoosic River Watershed Association (HooRWA) will be holding the annual Tomhannock Reservoir Shoreline Cleanup Day. The mission of the RLT is to “conserve the open spaces, watersheds and natural habitats of Rensselaer County for the benefit of our communities and future generations.”  Both organizations partner annually with the local community to dedicate a day each year to clean up the shoreline of one of the areas major water sources.

Assemblywoman Woerner on State Budget

Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake) announced that the state’s final budget will lower taxes for middle-class families, encourage economic development, provide a record increase in aid to our public schools and fully eliminate the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) this year, as well as support agriculture and environmental conservation.

CLIFTON PARK- (March 29).  It’s a collaborative effort between the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership, the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County …an initiative known as “Business First Saratoga.”
