Eleanor Pizen Lane – 81

HALFMOON- Eleanor Pizen Lane, 81, died Saturday morning, Sept. 21, at Glens Falls Hospital, after an extended illness.  Born in Troy, January 5, 1932, daughter of the late Michael and Anna Pizen, Ellie and her husband lived 42 years at their Route 236 address in Halfmoon, before moving to Pottersville,Warren County in 2002.

Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main ST., Mechanicville on Thursday from 4-7 PM.  Burial at the Saratoga National Cemetery on Friday at 10:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hudson Headwaters Health Foundation, 9 Carey Road, Queensbury, NY 12804, in memory of Eleanor P. Lane.

Thomas Dennis Canary, Jr. 70

STILLWATER - Thomas Dennis Canary, Jr. passed away Monday, September 23, 2013 at The Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. He was 70.

     Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Thursday, September 26, 2013 at  All Saints on the Hudson North Church, (St. Peter's), 881 Hudson Avenue, Stillwater.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Friday, September 27, 2013 at All Saints on the Hudson North Church. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery, Stillwater.

Danelle Haner of Mechanicville Named to the Women's Soccer Team at SUNY Delhi

DELHI, NY (09/20/2013)(readMedia)-- Danelle Haner of Mechanicville, NY is a participating member of the SUNY Delhi Women's Soccer Team. Haner is pursuing an associate's degree in Business Administration at Delhi.

SUNY Delhi's outstanding facilities have attracted the NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship, the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship, and the NJCAA Division III Cross Country Championship. The Clark Field house features the Floyd L. Maines Arena, the CADI Fitness Center, and a mini-dome. The college's athletic facilities also include the Kunsela Hall Aquatics Center, The College Golf Course, an eight-lane 400-meter outdoor track, playing fields, racquetball/handball courts, and indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

Record Number of Students Take Part in SUNY Oneonta's Freshman Service Day

ONEONTA, NY (09/13/2013)(readMedia)-- A record number of SUNY Oneonta freshmen spent their first full day in Oneonta volunteering in the community. New students moved into their residence halls on Sunday, Aug. 25, and 202 of them participated in the college's sixth annual Freshman Service Day the next day.

Students worked at 19 volunteer sites in and around Oneonta, doing everything from painting and yardwork to helping elementary school teachers prepare classrooms for the new school year. Some students spent the day in canoes, helping the Otsego County Conservation Association to remove invasive water chestnuts from a wetland. The annual event is organized by the college'sCenter for Social Responsibility and Community. In addition to the 202 freshman volunteers, 30 upperclassmen and two faculty members participated as team leaders.

Stillwater’s 9/11 Ceremony – By Sandy McBride

For the past eleven years, the Stillwater community has gathered at Blockhouse Park in the center of the village on September 11 to remember Stillwater native Diane “Dani” Moore Parsons and the other 2,977 victims of the brazen terrorist attack on our nation in 2001, as well as to honor the civil servants and volunteers who rushed in to save lives and recover victims on that awful day, many of them at the cost of their own lives. 6,000 people were also injured in the attack and in the resulting collapse of buildings.

Brown’s Beach – Stillwater’s New Park – By Harold Wessell

TOWN OF STILLWATER, September 17 – After months of speculation, months of negotiation ...and years of community interest, long-missed Brown’s Beach began the journey back  to  its place in the leisure and recreation of  residents of Stillwater and Mechanicville, the Saratoga Lake area, the Towns of  Malta and Saratoga and beyond.

Wormuth Called to Resign/Halfmoon Town Budget – by Michael Bielawski

Halfmoon – A boomtown having doubled in size since 2001, Halfmoon’s town budget has been subject to criticism from the New York State Comptroller’s office for depleting its fund balance.  Depending on who you ask, the drained fund is either the product of the 2008 economic downturn, or just poor economic planning by the Town Board.  We spoke with Democrat Deana Stevenson who has been critical of the Town Board’s budgeting, and Republican Town Supervisor Mindy Wormuth, to get both sides of the story.

Agnes A. Burdick – 91

MECHANICVILLE - Agnes A.Burdick of South Street passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at her residence with her loving family at her side. She was 91.

Born in Hillsdale on December 9,1921, daughter of the late Ambrose and Alta(Wagner)Wilcox. She is predeceased by her husband Walter J. Burdick,Sr. whom passed away in 1975.

Agnes was a mother and homemaker,she is survived by the love of her life for the last 37 years,Joseph Borter, her children Bob(Barbara)Burdick,Carol Miller(Richard),Cora(Don)Chaput,Dorothy(Ralph)Pence,Richard Burdick(Michelle),Frank Burdick(Tammy),Kim Evans,Agnes(Steve)Barmash and Janet(Eric)Bilik,daugher-in-law Theresa Burdick,special friend Emma Thurber and five generations of family.

She is predeceased by her children Bill Burdick,Marie Mitchell,Walter J. Burdick,Jr. and Elmer Burdick.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11am on Wednesday, September 18 at the Elmwood Hill Cemetery,51 Belle Ave.,(off Pinewoods Ave.),Troy.

Cynthia Marie Aiardo – 65

MECHANICVILLE – Cynthia Marie Aiardo, 65, of South Main St., died peacefully at her home, Tuesday, Sept. 10th, in the loving company of her family.

Born in Troy, January 30, 1948, daughter of the late William and Grace McGuire Shaw, she was the widow of Vincent James Aiardo, who died in 1998.

A homemaker, Cindy loved raising her children and helping with her grandchildren, who were her whole life. She led a true Mothers life, caring for her family, first and foremost.

Survivors include her five children: Lisa and Tim Plasencia and Vincent J and Pamela Aiardo all of Mechanicville, Lynn (Labar Tillman) Hayner of Troy, Jacqueline and Tony Signorelli of Schroon Lake, Cindy and Joe Garrett of Land O Lakes, Fla, adored grandchildren: Timmy Plasencia, Jr., William Hayner III and Samantha Hayner, Vincent J. Aiardo, IV, along with a number of brothers and sisters, in-laws and their families.

Private services were held at the convenience of her family.

Burial was in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Mechanicville.

Remembrances can be made to either Community Hospice or American Cancer Society in loving memory of Cynthia “Cindy” Aiardo.

DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary C. Hunter – 88

MECHANICVILLE – Mrs. Mary C. Hunter, 88, of No. Main St., died Wednesday morning, Sept. 11th, at Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa, after an extended illness.

Born in Pennsylvania, March 27, 1925, she was the widow of Charles Hunter who died in 1987 and mother of a son Thomas Hunter, who died in 2010.

A homemaker, Mary and family operated the Valley Inn in Valley Falls for a number of years, and had also worked for the NYS Dept. of Tax and Finance for several years.

Mary loved working with crafts such as knitting and crocheting, and enjoyed cooking for her family.  She was a member of the Mid-Rise Tenants Assoc.

 

Survivors include son Charles (Kimberly) Hunter of Holiday, Fla, Cathy (Mark Tryneszewski) Dougall of Mechanicville, Richard (Victoria) Hunter of Valley Falls and Denny Hunter of Schuylerville, a daughter-in-law Darlene Hunter of Troy, and a number of grand and great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 3 PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.  Burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke.

Calling hours at the Funeral Home, Saturday from 1-3 PM.

Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, in memory of Mary C. Hunter.
