Malta Mulling GloFo Interest in Supporting Beach Purchase – By Harold Wessell

TOWN OF STILLWATER, June 20 – Stillwater Supervisor Edward Kinowski took some time at the start of the first Town Board Business meeting in a new Town Hall to address some news generated that day on a radio station and newspaper.

Indeed, he began, it was why he requested an on-air interview with YNN, and seen around the time the board meeting was starting, concerning the prospective purchase and revival of Brown’s Beach.

"There's a lot of misinformation that is out there." he began. "Here's the straight skinny from me.  And I don't know what else to say," as he outlined that the longtime favorite recreation place for people from Stillwater, Mechanicville, Malta and beyond lies completely within the bounds of the Town of Stillwater; that his Town is the only entity in formal negotiation with the current owner to purchase it – and that, while a money contribution by the chipmaker would be most welcome, the Town has been methodically working out how it could make the purchase on its own.

Town Now On Course For Possible Beach Purchase – By Harold Wessell

TOWN OF STILLWATER, June 6 – "There isn't a person that hasn't come up to me and said, ‘When are we going to buy it?' ... ‘When is the deal done?'" Town Supervisor Edward Kinowski told Wednesday's Town Board Agenda Meeting. "There has not been a negative word from one person" about the prospect that the old Brown's Beach site on Saratoga Lake will soon become a facility of the Town of Stillwater in various ways. "We're taking a number of steps toward bringing us closer to a purchase agreement."

The Supervisor, stressing that he is addressing the prospect only to the extent he is entitled to at this stage, told Wednesday's Town Board Agenda meeting that it was unlikely there could be any community use of Brown's Beach this year; but at least its status should be should be established in 120 days or less.  That is the amount of time a prospective purchaser has to complete a closing after a Letter of Intent (LOI) to purchase has been signed – as it now has.

The June 5 public hearing was on the charter portion of the project.

Accounts Commissioner Mark Seber pointed out that the Council considered a hearing at the next meeting, but that is July 3. While there will be a meeting as usual at 7PM, it was felt the coming holiday makes it not the best time for a public hearing. The next one accordingly will be at the first meeting in August, then in September and probably October.

Malta & Stillwater Rescues to Combine – By Harold Wessell

MALTA, May 29 – Malta Ambulance Corps representatives met with the Malta Town Board

at its agenda meeting for June 3, to outline a proposed plan, long under consideration by the Corps and the Stillwater Rescue Squad, that would essentially absorb the Stillwater service and formalize daytime assistance that Malta has been providing for a decade.

The move reflects steps - such as hiring paid staff for daytimes -- that emergency services including fire departments have had to resort to for some years because of lack of volunteers.

New Stewarts in Malta? – By Harold Wessell

MALTA, May 20 – "You don't have a quota," Stewart's real estate director Tom Lewis recalled former company head Bill Dake saying –  when the company already had 189 stores. " If it doesn't make sense doing it... I don't just want more stores."

The company, accordingly he told Malta leaders at Monday's workshop, has  walked away from a fair amount of sites "that might have been good for one reason or another."

In particular, as the  proposal for a shop in Maltaville near the Rte. 67 entrance to Luther Forest Technology campus has evolved, Lewis acknowledged that in trying to find a specific "public benefit" – a crucial requirement for granting the Planned Development District rezoning of a property, it's all come down to water.

Malta’s One Room School Houses – By Harold Wessell

MALTA, April 24 – A member of the audience drew laughter – one of many such moments – during Malta Historian Paul Perreault's presentation on one room schoolhouses in Malta.

"Is it true that boys used to dip the girls' pigtails in the inkwells?"  "Yes, they did!" confirmed alumna Olga Voehringer.

Perreault, who titled his presentation "Education in Malta --3R's to TEC SMART" began by recalling some words of a 1907 song not sung much now: "School days, school days, good old Golden Rule days..." of learning the "Three R's." (For those who may be too young, that's for "readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic.") The event was held at Malta Ridge United Methodist Church, and featured many photos of school groups and school documents.
