Saratoga Property Tax Decreased – by Harold Wessell
BALLSTON SPA, November 8 – Saratoga County taxpayers will pay a little less property tax than previously estimated. Two developments have added almost $500,000 to the 2013 Tentative Budget which will be voted on by the Board of Supervisors in December.
A change in the way the County pays for health care, and the newly-pending purchase of 15 acres of the never utilized County landfill in Northumberland will enable officials to reduce an anticipated 2.5 percent increase to a little less than 1.6 percent, as Law and Finance Committee Chairman Alan Grattidge of Charlton announced at a Nov. 8 budget workshop.

Mechanicville Elementary Holds Special Assembly Honoring Veterans – by Sandy McBride
The students at Mechanicville Elementary School arrived at school on Friday morning knowing that it was a special day, that they would have a special assembly that morning honoring veterans. Imagine the children’s surprise when they climbed down from their buses and filed through the front doors to find their hallway lined with bearded, leather-jacketed and be-medaled, American flag-toting members of the Patriot Guard. Yes, it was going to be a special day indeed.
In a moving and meaningful ceremony organized by elementary school teachers and staff, Elks Veteran Chairperson Justine Crowley-Duncan and the students themselves, the assembly featured many honored guests, introductions, music and song, recitations, video, and a panel of military representatives who answered questions from the kids on what serving in the military is all about.

Rosemarie Gemmiti Corbett -74
MECHANICVILLE – Rosemarie Gemmiti Corbett, 74, of Riverside Park North, died Saturday evening at home, Oct. 27th, after a brief battle with respiratory ailments, in the loving company of her family.
Born in Mechanicville, and longtime resident of South Main St., Rosemarie was born March 15, 1938, daughter of the late Saratoga County Commissioner of Social Services Joseph V. and wife Fanny Conte Gemmiti.

Katherine A. Foote Gotts - 100
HALFMOON - Katherine A. Foote Gotts, 100, formerly of Flint, N.Y. died (October 30), at the Hoosick Falls Health Center after a long illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Harold Gotts. They were married for 75 years.

Mrs. Nancy M. Gandron – 78
MECHANICVILLE – Mrs. Nancy M. Gandron, 78, of River Road, HemstreetPark, died Thursday evening, Nov. 8th, at Albany Medical Center, from complications resulting from a fall the previous day.
A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born January 13, 1934, daughter of the late Joseph and Caroline Pitcheralle, she was a Mechanicville High School graduate, Class of 1951.

Sid Foley – 51
Sid Foley of Weatherwax Lane, Melrose, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Albany Medical Center. He was 51.
Born in Alexandria, VA on July 14, 1961 to the late Elbert G. and Winnifred (Harris) Foley. Sid is the husband of Frances V.(Sander) Foley whom he married on July 3, 1988.
Sid worked for US Airways, and recently was a ramp service supervisor at Southwest Airlines.

Robert A. Ahrent – 61
STILLWATER – Robert A. Ahrent, 61, of Oak Lane, died Tuesday, Nov. 6th, at his home, after a long illness, in the loving company of his family.
Born in Elizabethtown, NY, April 7, 1951, he was the son of the late Elaine Currier Grober.
A millwright most of his life, Bob worked at Al Tech Specialty Steel Co. in Watervliet for 27 years, until retiring on disability a number of years ago.
He was a member of the United Steelworkers Union, had served with the US Marine Corps, loved fishing, and enjoyed bowling in several leagues including the Saturday Nite Live League for years at Hometown Lanes.

The Year of the Coach – By Doug Keenholts
If you could have any job in sports right now, one that should be at or near the top of the list is agent for a head coach. If the 2012 sports year has taught us anything it’s that good coaching matters. If I’m an agent for any successful head coach or manager right now I’m looking to renegotiate a contract. Strike while the iron is hot.
Exactly how much value a head coach or manager adds to a team is considered a gray area, and has long been a good source for bar room arguments. The chief example is Phil Jackson. Eleven NBA titles as a head coach, the only coach to win more than ten in all of the major North American sports, yet for years his contributions were downplayed because none of those titles came without Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant. There was a persistent viewpoint that just about anyone could have coached those Bulls and Lakers teams to titles. That perception shifted with his last two Lakers titles, which were without Shaquille O’Neil and in a more balanced league, and Jackson is now perceived, rightfully in my opinion, as the greatest team coach in history. As great a player as Michael Jordan was, he never won a title without Phil Jackson. But that “chicken or the egg” argument still holds water with some people. After 2012 I think it can be finally put to bed.
