Movements Supporting Second Amendment Continue – By Christine Barton

On February 12th at the monthly meeting, the Rensselaer County Legislature passed a resolution affirming support of the Second Amendment and opposition to the attempts to infringe on those rights.  According to the minutes, the resolution was approved by a 14 to 4 margin, with four members of the Democratic minority voting in opposition to the resolution.

The resolution reads, “ be it resolved that this Legislative Body affirms support for the Second Amendment, and state opposition to the Legislation NY SAFE Act adopted by the State Legislature restricting the rights of gun owners and opposes attempts on the Federal level to implement new restrictions on these rights.” Certified copies of the resolution in its entirety will be sent to the necessary representatives.

Mechanicville Statistically A Low-Crime Area – By Harold Wessell

MECHANICVILLE, Feb. 20 – Crime activity in Mechanicville decreased by a small percentage in 2012, according to Chief Joseph Waldron's annual report, presented at the Feb. 20 City Council meeting.

The only notable exception was in domestic violence cases. Arrests were up 4 percent along with a 32 percent increase in incidents.

CLIFTON PARK – Barbara Mazza Karwowski, 69, of LaCosta Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 27th at home, after a long battle with ALS.

karwowski,barb0001Born in Northampton, NH, August 15, 1943, she was daughter of the late Jerry and Helen Mazza. Barb was a graduate of St. Michael’s Academy and Northampton Comm. College both ofNorthampton.

Mrs. Anna Baisley Burrello – 73

MECHANICVILLE - Mrs. Anna Baisley Burrello, 73, of Hemstreet Park, died Tuesday evening Feb 26th, at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy after a brief illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Hemstreet Park, born June 14, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mildred Swars Baisley.  She was a 1956 graduate of Mechanicville High School.

While and after raising her three sons, Annie was a bus driver for over 30 years for theMechanicville Public School District.  Conscious of her passengers, safety was always Annie's goal, and she prided herself with her driving record.  In addition to bus driving, she assisted with her family's business, Burrello Construction and Heavy Equipment for years.

This Month in the Civil War: Hooker & Grant – By Sandy McBride

In February, 1863, the Union’s mighty Army of the Potomac was in a bad way.  Two ignominious failures at Fredericksburg had disheartened the once-proud but poorly-led Federal troops.  After the debacle of the failed “mud march” to Fredericksburg in late January, many Union soldiers had just walked away, deserting the army.  President Abraham Lincoln, in his quest to find the man who could lead what should be a superior force to victory over the rebels, had appointed General “Fighting Joe” Hooker to the top post, replacing General Ambrose Burnside.

Changes were immediate as Hooker set out to restore order and confidence to the demoralized army.

Joseph Siracusano Downs – 86

MECHANICVILLE – Joseph Siracusano Downs, 86 of Davenport Estates, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 26th at Saratoga Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born in Jamaica, NY, Oct. 18, 1926, Joe served in the US Army’s 458th Quartermaster Corps in the South Pacific during WWII.  A self-employed house painting contractor his whole life, Joe was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Malta.

Joe was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to all his family.

Carmella Palmer Scarati – 93

MECHANICVILLE – Carmella Palmer Scarati, 93, of No. Main St., died Tuesday evening at Evergreen Commons, East Greenbush, after a brief illness.  A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, she was born April 23, 1919, daughter of the late Stanislaw and Marianne Enzogna Palmer.

A homemaker most of her life, she was an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting, and had a knack for word search puzzles.  A member of the Mechanicville Area Senior Citizens, she was also a lifelong member of the Assumption-St. Paul Parish and the church’s Rosary Alter Society.

Mrs. Olive Wood Conerty – 96

MECHANICVILLE – Mrs. Olive Wood Conerty, 96, of Valley View Drive, passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa, after a short illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born April 25, 1916, daughter of the late Arthur and Adabelle Wood, she was a 1933 graduate of Mechanicville High School.

Olive was a member of the Eastern Star, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the church’s St. Martha’s Guild.

Assemblyman Steven F. McLaughlin Visits Pleasantdale Rod & Gun Club – By Melissa LeMay

TROY – Monday evening February 18th the Pleasantdale Rod & Gun club had a packed house for their monthly meeting. This monthly meeting wasn’t like the normal monthly meetings with what happened last month, what’s going on for the upcoming month and financial numbers; this meeting was to meet Assemblyman Steven F. McLaughlin and hear him talk about the NY SAFE Act and what the people of Rensselaer County and other counties can do; to help get this bill repealed. Assemblyman McLaughlin went into full detail about the SAFE Act and that he feels this is an attack on our 2nd amendment rights.
