Statement from Senator Kathleen A. Marchione (R,C-Halfmoon)

“This afternoon, my Albany Office received 20 calls from constituents inquiring if we had sent out ‘robo’ (automated) calls regarding casino gaming asking whether individuals support or oppose the issue. Constituents have said that the voice on the robo call claims that it originated from my office. For the record, my office is NOT sending these calls out. We are presently trying to find the source of the calls and are in the process of reporting them to State Attorney General Schneiderman’s Office. If a constituent in the 43rd Senate District does receive such a robo call, I ask them to please contact my office at 455-2381, or e-mail me atmarchione@nysenate.gov so we may compile a complete record for the Attorney General to help stop these annoying robo calls. Thank you.”

CANAL CORPORATION TAKING PRECAUTIONS AS HEAVY RAINS HIT NEW YORK

The New York State Canal Corporation has announced several preemptive measures it has taken in response to a large storm system that is affecting most of the eastern United States, including many areas throughout the Canal Corridor in upstate New York. 

“All Canal employees are on high alert and we are carefully monitoring conditions throughout the Canal system,” said Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton. “The measures being taken are preventative in nature and are designed to minimize impacts related to flooding, and to allow us to re-open all sections of the canal as quickly as possible once the storm passes.” 

The Canal Corporation had lowered levels in different areas of the Canal system, including the Mohawk River portion of the Erie Canal, in advance of today’s rainfall to build additional storage for rising waters. 

In addition, the following measures have been taken: 

  • Locks E-6 (Waterford) through E-25 (Mays Point) on the Erie Canal are closed;
  • Locks C-1 (Halfmoon) through C-7 (Fort Edward) on the Champlain Canal are closed;
  • Locks O-1 (Phoenix) through O-8 (Oswego) on the Oswego Canal are closed;
  • The Cayuga-Seneca Canal is closed from Lock CS-1 (Cayuga) to the Erie Canal;
  • Canal staff is coordinating closely with the National Weather Service;
  • Canal staff has assisted in moving vessels on the Canal to more secure locations as necessary, and assisting vessel owners with access to electricity, water, bathrooms and other services.

Johnsonville FD Receives Brookfield Grant – By Christine Barton

Johnsonville-On Thursday June 6th 2013 the Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Company was presented with a check for $21,000 from the Brookfield Renewable Energy Group. This generous contribution will enable the Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Company, established in 1916, to purchase new swift water rescue equipment. The Johnsonville Volunteer Fire Company serves the towns of Pittstown and Schaghticoke.

According to Brookfield General Manager of New York East Operations, Thomas Uncher, the donation was made through Brookfield’s Community Investment Initiative. Brookfield Renewable Energy Group owns and operates 75 hydropower facilities throughout New York State, two of those being on the Hoosic River. The group proactively promotes year round water safety initiatives

Battle of Midway Commemorated on USS Slater in Albany – By Sandy McBride

The Battle of Midway took place on June 3, 1942, and was the first significant American victory in the Pacific Theater of World War II.  Just six months after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor plunged the United States of America into war with Japan, our Pacific Fleet had only three duty-ready aircraft carriers with support craft and a limited number of pilots, planes and provisions.  Yet the US Navy took on a superior Japanese force at Midway Atoll and defeated them soundly.

It was a turning point for the United States, and each year for 71 years, that victory is remembered throughout the nation.

Town Now On Course For Possible Beach Purchase – By Harold Wessell

 

TOWN OF STILLWATER, June 6 – "There isn't a person that hasn't come up to me and said, ‘When are we going to buy it?' ... ‘When is the deal done?'" Town Supervisor Edward Kinowski told Wednesday's Town Board Agenda Meeting. "There has not been a negative word from one person" about the prospect that the old Brown's Beach site on Saratoga Lake will soon become a facility of the Town of Stillwater in various ways. "We're taking a number of steps toward bringing us closer to a purchase agreement."

The Supervisor, stressing that he is addressing the prospect only to the extent he is entitled to at this stage, told Wednesday's Town Board Agenda meeting that it was unlikely there could be any community use of Brown's Beach this year; but at least its status should be should be established in 120 days or less.  That is the amount of time a prospective purchaser has to complete a closing after a Letter of Intent (LOI) to purchase has been signed – as it now has.

City of Mechanicville Hearing on Charter – By Harold Wessell

MECHANICVILLE, June 5 – The City Council held the first of several public hearings expected over next few months   to update and make changes to the charter and city code.

The June 5 public hearing was on the charter portion of the project.

Accounts Commissioner Mark Seber pointed out that the Council considered a hearing at the next meeting, but that is July 3. While there will be a meeting as usual at 7PM, it was felt the coming holiday makes it not the best time for a public hearing. The next one accordingly will be at the first meeting in August, then in September and probably October.
