Kenneth D. Patenaude – 89

STILLWATER- Kenneth D. Patenaude, 89, longtime resident of Hudson Ave., died Saturday, August 17th at home, after being stricken.

Born in Mechanicville, Sept. 21, 1923, son of the late William and Florence Patenaude, Ken enlisted in the US Navy during WWII, serving aboard the USS Upham APD-99, in the Atlantic Theater and Mediterranean Sea.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years Louise Gaudette Patenaude, daughter Deborah (Bob Hagadorn) Patenaude, son Kenneth R. (Phyllis) Patenaude and granddaughter Rebecca Patenaude all of Stillwater, sister Doris Petronis of Mechanicville and brother Earl Patenaude of Cal., along with many nieces, nephews and their families.

Ken was also predeceased by sisters Lydia DeLaRosa, Evelyn Bolton, Connie Rush and brothers Lionel, LeRoy, Wilford and Arnold Patenaude.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 AM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.  Burial with military honors at Saratoga NationalCemetery.

Calling hours at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-8 PM.

Gail F. Martin – 73

MELROSE - Gail F. Martin of Maple Lane passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy with her family at her side. She was 73.

Born on March 9, 1940, daughter of the late Raymond George and Florence Elizabeth (Nellis) Lester. She is the wife of Thomas A. Martin whom she married on March 22, 1958.

Gail worked as a medical records clerk for the Eddy Visiting Nurses in Troy. She enjoyed the Saturday Night Troy Lanes Bowling Club and in earlier years she and Tom loved riding motorcycles. Gail also loved horses.

Survivors in addition to her husband Thomas include her children, Debi (Jeff) Dingman of Greenwich, Cheri (Joseph) Blais of Alamogordo, NM, Wayne and Sherry Martin of Schaghticoke and Kimberly (Gregory) Bruck of Nashville, TN., her siblings Eleanor Gambelli and Joyce (Bud) Bessette both of Watervliet as well as her brother in law Francis Martin and sister in law Jane Martin and her 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her sister Jeanne Wunderlich and brother George Lester.

Relatives and friends may call from 9-11am on Wednesday, August 21 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main Street with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Kathleen M. Raylinsky – 86

MECHANICVILLE - Mrs. Kathleen M. Raylinsky, 86, of Raylinsky Lane, died Monday, August 12th, at her home, after an extended illness.

A native of Mechanicville, born December 1, 1926, she was daughter of the late Albert and Florence Gronczniak Limburg Roberts.

Survivors include her daughter Carol A. Giacchetta and husband Michael of Naples, Fla., grandson Brian Giacchetta of Wilton, grandchildren Brian and Brooke Giacchetta, her sister Louise Mormile of Stillwater, sister-in-law Hedwig (Edward) Russell of Mechanicville, along with nieces, nephews and their families.

Kathleen's family thanks nurses of Hospice and Marilyn Mahoney, her personal care giver, for their efforts in keeping Kathleen in the comfort of her home.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, August 19th at 2 PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.

Burial in St. Paul's Cemetery.

Roger Brackett Vickery – 72

SCHAGHTICOKE - Roger Brackett Vickery of S. Linden Street passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy. He was 72.

Born in North Adams, MA on February 17, 1941, son of the late Charles and Eva Adelaide (Holt) Vickery. He is the husband of Yvonne (LaRock) Vickery whom he married on November 5, 1989.

Roger attended Hoosic Valley Central Schools and was proud of his service with the United States Marine Corps. He worked as a supervisor for General Motors in Freemont, CA and locally he worked at Deer Run Campgrounds until it was sold and he continued on to work for Douglas R. Dyer and Son Construction Co. He was a past member of the Elks Lodge #1403 and member of the American Legion Post 731, Schaghticoke. Roger was an avid hunter and loved being outdoors.

Survivors in addition to his wife Yvonne include his sisters, Dona (Earl) McLaughlin of Plymouth, MA and Jacklyn Dyer of Melrose, his brother Robert Vickery of Stillwater and his children Roger Vickery, Paula Abrain, Robert Vickery and Catherine Schollard all of MA, sister-in-laws Norma Vickery and Mildred Vickery both of Mechanicville as well as 7 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his brother Charles Edward Vickery and his twin brother John Vickery.

Relatives and friends may call from 10-11am on Monday, August 19 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 319 Park Avenue, Mechanicville. Funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home at 11am. Interment will follow in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery with military honors.

Kate Hewitt & John Reynolds: A Civil War Love Story

John Fulton Reynolds was a career soldier.  He was a West Point graduate, an experienced commander who so impressed President Abraham Lincoln with his ability as a military man that the president offered him command of the Army of the Potomac as it pursued General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate Army of Virginia on their northward move in June of 1863.  Because Lincoln would not assure him there would be no political interference with the job, Reynolds politely declined and remained in the field.  He was well-respected, a much-loved leader of men and married to his job.  There was no time for romance . . . or so his family, friends and comrades-in-arms thought.

They would learn otherwise.

City Charter and Code Approval

MECHANICVILLE, August 7– The City of Mechanicville will hold the last of a series of informational public hearings on Sept. 4, following one held at the August 7 meeting council meeting.

While hearings so far have been of a less formal nature, Accounts Commission Mark Seber explained that the August 7 discussion covered about half of the proposed Code updates; and the Sept 4 meeting will address the remaining half. The plan, explained Seber, is on the first week in October, at the 7:00 PM Council meeting, to hold an official, required by law, Public Hearing on both documents; and to hold a vote that night if there are no changes to be considered.

Kayaking4Meso

The time is now to sign up for a challenging and enjoyable paddle down the beautiful and historic Hudson River from Schuylerville or Stillwater to Mechanicville to raise funds for research seeking a cure for mesothelioma.  Mark Wells, organizer of Kayaking4Meso, is hoping that 200 kayakers will join him in the third year of this event which will be held on September 21.

Mrs. Viola M. Wright – 87

MECHANICVILLE - Mrs. Viola M. Wright, 87, of River Road, Hemstreet Park, died Tuesday, August 13, at Crescent Manor Care Ctr in Bennington, Vt., following an extended illness.

Born in Troy, April 9, 1926, daughter of the late Legrand and Emma Salway Clements, Viola was the widow of Raymond Wright who died in 1981.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville.  Burial in Stillwater Union Cemetery.  Calling hours at the Funeral Home on Friday from 4-7 PM.
