A Starry, Starry Night – By Sandy McBride

They called it “A Starry, Starry Night”, and it was indeed.  Even though the Appreciation Night Dinner was put on to honor and thank the individuals, businesses and organizations, the “stars” in the Mechanicville and Stillwater communities who unfailingly support the community service activities of the All Saints on the Hudson Youth Council, perhaps the real “stars” of the evening were the youth council members and leaders themselves.  The young people, teen-agers all, welcomed the guests as they arrived, ran the program, served the beverages, waited on tables, and cleaned up when it was over.

The South Campus Parish Center was beautifully decorated with bright stars on blue. As he began his invocation, Rev. Thomas Morrette, pastor of All Saints on the Hudson, commented that “this is a community of caring and sharing”.

PART II – EMANCIPATION AND THE “MUD MARCH” – By Sandy McBride

THIS MONTH IN THE CIVIL WAR - JANUARY 1863

News of the victory at Stones River was greeted with a sigh of relief by President Abraham Lincoln.  He wired General William Rosecrans “I can never forget, whilst I remember anything, that you gave us a hard earned victory which, had there been a defeat instead, the nation could hardly have lived over.”

The president had been under increasing criticism for the failures in the war, and many northerners were grumbling that it should be given up.  The victory in Tennessee gave Lincoln a small measure of support in his determination to save the Union.
