The Mechanicville Area Community Services Center celebrated their annual “Hearts of the Community” at Fairways of Halfmoon last Friday evening, honoring the local Outstanding Service Organization, Company, Volunteer, and Community Partner. And this year, the center also presented the Founders’ Award.

Local Students Elected to Phi Beta Kappa at SUNY Geneseo

Robert Krupanich Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

131 Students Receive 2014-2015 Susan Sutton Smith Award

ONEONTA, NY (04/10/2015)(readMedia)-- A total of 131 students received the SUNY Oneonta 2014-2015 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher.

Student award winners receive a certificate, a gift card to the campus bookstore, and an invitation to attend the annual Susan Sutton Smith Lecture and reception. Dr. Joseph Pignato, associate professor of music at SUNY Oneonta, will deliver this year's lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Craven Lounge of the college's Morris Conference Center. Pignato is the 21st recipient of the Susan Sutton Smith Faculty Prize for Academic Excellence, created to recognize faculty achievement outside the classroom and named in memory of the late SUNY Oneonta professor of English.

Margaret Sanderson Inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma

ONEONTA, NY (04/09/2015)(readMedia)-- Margaret Sanderson of Schaghticoke, NY, was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, on April 9. Sanderson, who is majoring in Early/Elementary Education, is a member of the Cross Country & Track & Field team at SUNY Oneonta.

Jennifer Lachell of Waterford, NY Inducted into Phi Kappa Phi at Nazareth College

ROCHESTER, NY (03/16/2015)(readMedia)-- The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to announce that Jennifer Lachell of Waterford, NY, was recently initiated into the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter at Nazareth College. Lachell is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Society has chapters on nearly 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.

Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least seventy-two semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Mechanicville Sports Teams Earn Scholar Athlete Honors – by S. McBride

   Before the new school year starts at the end of each summer, high school kids hit the fields and courts to get ready for fall sports.  Any high school athlete will tell you that getting whipped back into shape after summer vacation takes a lot of hard work.  But then the first day of school arrives, and they also have to get back into study mode which is also a lot of work.

   When high school students can put together a fall sports season and a first marking period and show remarkable success in both, it’s a tribute to their work ethic, their time management and their desire to succeed.  It’s also a tribute to the coaches and teachers who demand the best from them.
