Mrs. Agnes “Shirley” Rathbun – 85

STILLWATER – Mrs. Agnes “Shirley” Rathbun, 85, of County Road 75, died Monday, March 18that Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa, following an extended illness.

Born and educated in Pittsfield, Mass, daughter of the late Louis and Blanche Laramee, Shirley was the wife of the late Donald A. Rathbun who died in 2011 and mother of a late daughter Linda Jacques.  A registrar’s secretary for Russell Sage College for years, she also was a former admissions secretary at Emma Willard School both of Troy. She and her late husband had operated Rathbun’s Dollhouse in Eagle Mills for 7 years.

Cobb Speaks at Mechanicville Highschool – by Sandy McBride

So said former pro football player Michael Cobb speaking to students in Mechanicville Junior/Senior High School last week.  Mr. Cobb talked to the boys and girls about goals, dreams, success, love, communication, commitment, dedication and making good choices.  The imposing but personable 6 foot 5 inch athlete wandered through the auditorium as the classes came in, talking with many of the kids as they took their seats.

After being introduced to the students by high school principal Kevin Kolakowski, Mr. Cobb.  took the stage to begin his remarks.  He asked the boys and girls how many of them had hugged their parents that morning before they left for school?

“Stop and take the time,” he said, “it only takes a few seconds to tell someone you love them.”

Town of Schaghticoke Opposes SAFE – by Christine Barton

SCHAGHTICOKE - Approximately 50 counties in New York State have passed or are considering passing resolutions opposing the NYS SAFE Act. The legislation, which was passed on January 15th 2013, has caused much controversy across the state since its inception. The number of town and municipalities that are passing resolutions opposing this Act, which is considered by many to be unconstitutional, are rapidly growing in number.

Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot

MECHANICVILLE - The Mechanicville Stillwater Elks Lodge #1403 recently participated in the Elks National Hoop Shoot program. Beginning in November and working with the modified basketball coaches and gym programs at our local schools (Mechanicville and Stillwater), approximately 600 students took part in the Hoop Shoot.  The Lodge wishes to thank the schools, staff, volunteers, parents, and participants for supporting this great youth program!

The “Three Days” of Ancient Easter – by Harold Wessell

Many Christians, especially in smaller towns,  recall when much of daily business and even leisure activity came to a halt from Noon to 3:00PM on Good Friday in reverence for Jesus' suffering and death on the Cross. On that day most of all,  the custom developed of services focused on the  Seven Last Words from the Cross, a custom that many churches still cherish.

   In Roman Catholic tradition, the services of the Sacred Triduum – Latin for a three-day period -- are said not to be separate; but  truly one  continuous liturgy, a sort of "elongated Holy Day."  The Mass of Holy Thursday and the Liturgy on Good Friday actually do not include closing rites. Rather, they build organically toward the Easter Vigil, and together express the whole of Jesus’ "Passover" experience of suffering, death and resurrection.

Lois A. Walsh – 74

BALLSTON SPA – Lois A. Walsh, 74, of Uncas Lane, and former resident of Mechanicville andStillwater, died early Monday morning, March 18, at Saratoga Hospital, after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, August 24, 1938, she was daughter of the late John and Myrtle Sloan, and was a 1956 graduate of Mechanicville High School.  A care giver at Little Sister’s of the Poor formerly of Troy, Lois also had been a teller at Northeast Saving Bank in Saratoga Springs and was real estate broker for Welbourne and Purdy for several years.

John Mark “Ponzi” Ponzillo – 74

MECHANICVILLE – John Mark “Ponzi” Ponzillo, 74, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus, Friday, March 15th. A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born May 15, 1938, son of the late Mark and Jennie Forte Ponzillo, he was a 1955 graduate of Mechanicville High School. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, as an Admirals guard while at sea. As the owner operator of Ponzi’s Hairstyling Center in Mechanicville for over 45 years, Ponzi enjoyed friendships with his many loyal customers, both male and female.

Catherine “Kate” Izzo – 90

MECHANICVILLE – Catherine “Kate” Russo Izzo, 90, of Saratoga Ave., died Tuesday morning March 12th at Maplewood Manor, after an extended illness.  A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born June 1, 1922, daughter of the late Salvatore and Frances Parente Russo, she was a 1940 graduate of Mechanicville High School and had attended Oneonta State College.

Mary R. Genevick – 94

MECHANICVILLE – Mary R. Genevick, 94, longtime resident of Upper Newtown Road, died Tuesday morning, March 12th at her daughters home in So. Glens Falls, in the company of her family, after a short illness.  Born in Mechanicville, Oct. 30, 1918, she was daughter of the late Angelo and Anna Dragonette. She and her late husband, Frank J. Genevick, who died Dec. 9, 1994, spent many happy years wintering in Florida.
