Mechanicville-Stillwater Cancer Walk Holds “Pink Night” – by T. Mahoney
MECHANICVILLE MAY 1- Every seat was taken at the Mechanicville Golf Course Restaurant . Over 120 people attended. This purpose was to raise funds for the Mechanicville - Stillwater Cancer Walk Committee.

Alonzo’s Fireworks Company Sold
STILLWATER MAY 4 Jeff Alonzo announced that after being in business for 45 years Alonzo fireworks has been sold. Santore's Fireworks purchased the company, in an announcement made today, Jeff said this was a decision based on a number of factors. Jeff is a full time firefighter; Jeff's mother, Joanne, is more than ready for retirement; regulations and price increases make operating a smaller business increasingly difficult.

Having hidden in the pine thicket in Maryland for several days as Federal troops scoured the area looking for them, Booth and Herold were desperate, hungry and cold, and Booth was in pain. Cox arranged for Thomas Jones, a die-hard Confederate sympathizer, to get them across the Potomac to safety in Virginia.

All Saints on the Hudson Basketball Benefit – by S. McBride
“Start Your Engines for a Cure!”
This was the theme of the 7th annual All Saints on the Hudson Youth Council Benefit Basketball Game held last week at the Mechanicville High School gym. With a fanciful design of a tugboat and a race car on white T-shirts and royal blue T-shirts, the theme honored Tim Pisculli of Mechanicville, a tugboat captain, and Karen Schultz of Stillwater, a NASCAR racing fan, who have both passed away recently after courageously battling cancer.

Nepal Earthquake Reaches Home – by C. Barton
On April 25th a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal resulting in a disaster that had effects of far reaching devastation. According to reports, the earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, then triggered another avalanche in Lantang Valley. This is the most powerful disaster to strike in Nepal since the 1930’s and saw aftermath that stretched far beyond South Asia. The earthquake in total killed approximately 7,000 people and injured more than 14,000. These numbers climb as recovery efforts continue. Nepal has been thought for decades as being vulnerable to the natural disaster of an earthquake.

Kimberlee Kocienski of Schaghticoke, N.Y., Earns NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Laurels
WORCESTER, MA (04/28/2015)(readMedia)-- Kimberlee Kocienski was one of 54 WPI spring student-athletes across five varsity sports to garner NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status, as recently announced.
Of the five teams announced, WPI saw three teams reach double digit recipients, with men's track and field leading the way with 20 honorees. Next was baseball and women's rowing with ten apiece, followed by women's track and field with nine and rounding out the selections was softball with five.
Local Students Inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society at Hudson Valley Community College
Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is indicative of academic excellence. Those inducted are matriculated students who have met standards including a grade point average of 3.71 or higher. The college's Alpha Xi Sigma chapter recognizes and promotes scholarship, develops leadership, encourages service and cultivates fellowship among qualified students of the college.

Alaina Larkin of Clifton Park Inducted Into Omicron Delta Kappa at St. Lawrence University
CANTON, NY (04/29/2015)(readMedia)-- Alaina E. Larkin of Clifton Park was inducted into the St. Lawrence University chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society.
Larkin is a member of the Class of 2015 and is majoring in international economics-multilanguage and mathematics. She graduated from Shenendehowa High School.
Local Students Honored for Academic Achievement at The College of Saint Rose
ALBANY, NY (04/27/2015)(readMedia)-- The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, announced that 107 students were honored for outstanding academic achievement at the Honors Convocation held recently on the Saint Rose campus.
These local students received the following awards:
Marlene Eckert of Clifton Park, a junior, received the Mary P. Vanderzee Memorial Award. This award is presented to a sophomore or junior in any degree program who is registered with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities. A minimum 3.0 grade-point average is required, and applicants must complete an application, which includes a 200-300 word essay.
Deanna Osborn of Clifton Park, a senior, Outstanding Senior in Special Education - Childhood Education Award and the Saint Rose of Lima Award Four-Year Student - Bachelor's Program. Outstanding Senior Awards are presented to graduating seniors who have at least a 3.50 grade-point average and who meet other criteria specified by the departments in which they study. The Saint Rose of Lima Award is presented to two graduating seniors who have maintained the highest cumulative average during their entire course of study at the College. One award is presented to a four-year student; the second award is presented to a transfer student.
Wilfred E. “Bill” Duchesne – 86
HALFMOON – Wilfred E. “Bill” Duchesne, 86 of Cemetery Road, died Tuesday, April 28th at his home, after an illness.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville. Burial with military honors in Hudson View Cemetery. Calling hours at the Funeral Home Friday from 4-7 PM.

Harvey “Jun” Peek Jr. – 81
CLIFTON PARK – Harvey “Jun” Peek, Jr., 81, of Vosburgh Mobile Home Park, died Friday, April 24, 2015, at Samaritan Hospital, Troy, after being stricken.
Born in Schenectady, Oct. 31, 1933, son of Harvey and Frances Horton Peek, he and family lived in his hometown before moving to Clifton Parkyears ago.
An expert wall paper taper, he plied his craft with G.E. in Schenectady for 27 years, retiring in 1993. Previously he had been sought after by many contractors to work with them, getting home construction work.
