John A. Erano – 83

MECHANICVILLE – John A. Erano, 83, of No. Third Ave., died Tuesday, April 16th at Ellis Hospital, after an extended illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born November 1, 1929, son of the late John and Angelina Petta Erano, John served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany.

David J. DiCerce – 56

MECHANICVILLE – David J. DiCerce, 56, former longtime resident of Mechanicville, died Monday, April 15th, a SaratogaHospital after a brief illness.

Born in Troy, March 15, 1957, he was son of the late Daniel and Christine DeMarco DiCerce. Afflicted at birth with Downs Syndrome, David was raised by his parents, and lived a happy and productive life, attending the Saratoga Bridges workshops over the years.  He especially enjoyed food, crosswords puzzles, crafts and watching pro wrestling.  David had the thrill of participating in the Special Olympics in such sports as bowling, long jump and equestrian events.

Mrs. Mary J. McLean – 92

MECHANCIVILLE – Mrs. Mary J. McLean, 92, longtime resident of Park Ave., died Wednesday morning, April 17th  at her daughters home in Greenwich after a brief illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born July 31, 1920, she was daughter of the late Anthony and Antoinette VanDetta DelPrete.

A sales clerk, Mary worked for many years at the former W.T. Grants store and later for Ben Franklin store both in theMechanicville Park Plaza.

Christopher Braim of Stillwater – New Member SUNY Delhi’s Golf Management Club

Christopher Braim Named Member of SUNY Delhi's Professional Golf Management Club

DELHI, NY (04/23/2013)(readMedia)-- Christopher Braim of Stillwater, NY, has been named a member of SUNY Delhi's Professional Golf Management Club for the 2012-13 academic year.

Braim is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business and Professional Golf Management.

The Professional Golf Management Club is one of over 50 recognized student organizations found on the SUNY Delhi campus. The college continues to seek opportunities in providing students with academic support outside of the classroom. The Professional Golf Management Club is a student-run organization with a purpose to promote fellowship among its members through golf-related activities. Students attend tournaments on a regular basis, such as a trip to the United States Golf Association in New Jersey. Members also plan and implement fundraiser and community service activities that foster their enjoyment of the game while enhancing their education.

Mrs. Edna H. Zullo – 85

MECHANICVILLE – Mrs. Edna H. Zullo, 85, former longtime resident of Mechanicville, died Monday April 8th at Wesley Health Care, Saratoga Springs, after a brief illness.

Born in Watervliet, August 29, 1927, she was daughter of the late Leland and Alberta Hazzard, lived in Waterford and No. Troywhile growing up.

Edna worked at Bubble’s Restaurant in Mechanicville for a number of years.  She also was a former president of the Meals on Wheels program in her city.

Arthur T. Patterson – 82

Stillwater - With profound sadness, Arthur T. Patterson passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at his home on Campbell Road due to complications associated with Parkinson's disease. He was 82.

Born and raised in Stillwater, he lived his entire life at his family's homestead. He grew up as the youngest of James and Nora Lynch Patterson's five children. He attended Stillwater schools and enlisted in the US Army in 1950 to begin a lifelong patriotic career serving his nation, state, and town.

Art was a Sergeant in C Co., 27th Infantry, Wolfhounds regiment of the US Army in Korea. the division received a presidential unit citation for stopping the enemy from taking Seoul. He proudly returned to Korea 34 years later in 1985 as a guest of the South Korean Veterans Association. His dedication to serve his nation and community continued his entire life.

Charles J. McCauley – 86

COLONIE – Charles J. McCauley, 86, of Huckleberry Lane, died at home, Saturday, April 13th, in the loving company of his family.

Born in Troy, July 3, 1926, son of the late Stephen and Barbara McCauley, Charlie grew and was educated in Troy schools.  A US Navy veteran of WWII, Charlie served aboard the USS Wadleigh DD-689 in the Pacific Theater of Operations, and was present during the surrender ceremony in the Sea of Japan to end the war.

A truck driver for the Montgomery Ward Co. in Menands for over 35 years before retirement.

Wendy Susko Robichaud

Stillwater, NY - Wendy Susko Robichaud passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013 at her home with her loving family by her side. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer less than a year ago.

Born on August 23, l971 at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY, she was the daughter of David C. Susko of Troy and Barbara Clow Susko of East Greenbush.

In April, 1863 the American Civil War was in its 25th month.  The winter had been a hard one, with excessive snow and rain and cold. For the soldiers of both sides, conditions were miserable.  Encamped in often inadequate shelter, lacking proper shoes and clothing, enduring poor pay and poor rations, for the soldiers, the spring warmth and improved travel conditions could not come soon enough.

In the Mississippi Valley, Union Commander Ulysses S. Grant was determined to get his men into position to capture the key port of Vicksburg, “the Gibraltar of the South”, from the well-fortified rebels, 60,000 strong under the command of General John Pemberton.  Grant had made seven attempts to get into Vicksburg through the cold, wet winter months, and all had failed. The warming days of April meant troops could soon be on the move overland. It was time to pull out all stops and take the city.
