Heroin is the Drug of Choice – by H. Wessell

BALLSTON SPA, February 18– The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department has devoted much attention to heroin abuse, which has become a nationwide epidemic. That includes our area.

The Sheriff’s Department continues to face the epidemic through backing tougher laws.

At the County Public Safety Committee meeting early this month, Sheriff Michael Zurlo  asked the full board to go on record with other municipalities  to support Laree’s Law. This is named for an 18 year old Colonie woman who succumbed to a heroin overdose in 2014.

Saratoga Sheriff & Emergency Management – by H. Wessell

BALLSTON SPA, October 22 –  “He and my office work in conjunction with... everything,” stated Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo of the  Director of the Office of Emergency Services,  Carl Zeilman. “We maintain the system, we expand that system, working together,” added Zeilman. “Our offices work together on the pre-planning for the County,” including the new, countywide  Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), which was created this year.

The Mechanicville Stillwater Elks Lodge held its annual scholarship dinner to honor students from the three local school districts  Mechanicville, Stillwater, and Hoosic Valley. The program was a combined event to recognize the Elks Honor Students from the 2014-2015 school year and the awarding of the Elks Scholarship to one graduating senior from each school. The event was attended by the students, their families, school administrative and guidance staff, and Elks officers and members.

Zurlo’s Outreach to Schools-by Harold Wessell

BALLSTON SPA, March 16 – There is a traditional expression for police officers that is still in official use: Peace Officer.
Keeping the peace – but even more so promoting it where individuals or groups may be having some personal issues or struggles – is at the heart of the new assignment given by Sheriff Michael Zurlo to Deputy Kenneth Cooper.
A month or so ago, Cooper was put in charge, full-time, of a new Sheriff's Department outreach to schools in Saratoga County. The Express recently had opportunity to see – as he might well ask a student: "So, how's it going?"
