Rens Co. Taking Water Samples in Petersburgh

RENSSELAER COUNTY - As of March 7, 2016 the Rensselaer County Department of Health has collected water samples from 60 samples including 44 private wells in the Town of Petersburgh. Results are expected in the next week or so and will be passed on directly to the individual home owners. Further testing is currently taking place. The geographic range of the testing will continue to expand until PFOA readings fall to an acceptable level.

Hoosic Valley Showcases Musical Talent – by Christine Barton

RENSSELAER COUNTY -On January 29th the All County Winter Festival, hosted by the Rensselaer County School Music Association, was held at Averill Park High School.  In addition to other participating schools throughout Rensselaer County, Hoosic Valley had 22 students selected to participate in various musical ensembles throughout the day’s events.

Pipeline Controversy in Rensselaer County – by C. Barton

Rensselaer County- Rensselaer County is currently faced with the potential for a natural gas pipeline proposal that will run through several towns in the county.  In late 2014, fracking, a widely used gas extracting technique, became illegal in New York State after legislation was put in place to prohibit this practice, however this law does not address the transporting of natural gas

Rudy Helmo: Expressionist Artist – by C. Kelly

Due to my travels and circumstances beyond my control, I am very late recommending that you see a very interesting exhibit of paintings at the Rensselaer County Historical Society, 57 2nd Street in Troy, open from Thursday-Saturday from noon to 5. This exhibit of paintings by Rudy Helmo only runs until the end of August. But the society also has a great exhibit of landscape views of Rensselaer County, which will be on view until the end of the year, so your trip in September would still be worthwhile!

Foster Parents Needed in the Area – by C. Barton

Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties- The signs “Become a Foster Parent” have been hanging in communities around the area. These signs have been seen at recent county fairs in Saratoga, Washington and Rensselaer County and are visible throughout communities in the area. We are lacking in families in Southern Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties at this time, says Kelli Reilly, Homefinder for the Foster Care Program at Berkshire Farm. Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth is a statewide agency that offers an array of services for children and families including foster care. The organization has been, “changing lives, changing futures, since 1886.”
