Brown’s Beach Attracting Volunteers – By Harold Wessell

TOWN OF STILLWATER, Nov. 19 ñ The rest of the story for Brown's Beach may be reminiscent of the words in the fantasy movie, "Build it, and they will come."

Right now, the story continues, and more and more, to be: "They will come and build it."

As the work parties at the longtime family spot continue week after week, in addition to individuals the list of local businesses that have something to offer to the project ñ several mentioned by Supervisor Edward Kinowski at the last Town Board meeting ñ keeps growing, as they step forward, some at great cost, to affirm in turn the Town that has sought to affirm them.

“The Only Sound Was Hoofbeats and Drumbeats” – By Sandy McBride

Greg Connors was just 9 years old when he stood alongside a street in Washington, D. C. with his dad, John H. Connors, and watched the funeral procession of our 35th president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, pass by.

A fourth grader at St. Paul’s School at the time, Greg says, “I was just a kid.  I didn’t really know what it was I was watching, but I knew it was something of historic significance”.

And 50 years later, he remembers it like it was yesterday. John had lifted Greg up to stand on a trash can so he could see it all.  What Greg remembers most vividly is the silence.  As the horse-drawn caisson carrying the president’s flag-draped coffin followed by the symbolic riderless horse passed by, Greg recalls that the only sounds to be heard were the clip-clop of hoofbeats on the pavement and the solemn cadence of drumbeats.

Each year, the Mechanicville Public Safety Office seeks volunteers willing to keep the bells  ringing as they volunteer their time to raise money for a good cause. It can often be difficult to find enough volunteers during the busy holiday season, so the Public Safety Office is asking community for help in keeping this tradition alive.
